Wheel lock key

Help. We bought our transit last June and love it. We got a 2016 connect used with only 11000 miles. Now we are in need of new tires. We just realized the dealer did not include the key for the wheel locking nuts. We have been to 2 ford dealers and 3 tire shops and no one can get nuts off nor have a key. They said our lock is different from others and their extraction kit will not work. Anyone have any experience or advise. Here is what it looks like.

81lKxXbMMoL._SL1500_.jpg You need a set of these.  They will work.  I don't know why your local shops don't have tools for doing the job.  They should.  Snap-On, Matco.....they all have a kit just for removing lug nut locks when someone loses the key.

This should not be such a mystery to the dealer. My key is labeled "orange" with an orange colored dot. This implies there are not a lot of key choices. If you can, go to another dealer, or contact an on line dealer like Tasca and they may be more helpful. You should also check the Ford Focus forums, those guys have nothing but premium alloy wheels on their cars.

I've always wondered how some dealerships have such sharp people, and great service.......while other dealerships suck the big one.  That goes across the board.  A friend of mine has a Mercedes with a non-serviceable transmission.  Yet, her dealership charges her for a transmission service once a year.This same dealership also puts a little sticker on her windshield and calls to remind her, that she is suppose to bring in her vehicle every 3 months for maintenance, or they won't honor her warranty......despite the fact that in the owner's manual, they recommend Mobil1 full synthetic, with service intervals at every 10K miles.

When my new 2015 TC came with wheel locks, part of the written deal was for them to be removed and replaced with standard lug nuts. Years ago I came across a guy stranded on the road because even though he had the key, it was slipping on the locking nut and so no way to fix a simple flat tire. From that day on I swore I would never use them. Part of the reason I wanted it to be part of the deal was that way if there was a problem removing the lock, it was the dealer's responsibility to fix it. Especially when I saw how tiny the little lugs were on the key, I am surprised they don't strip out the first time you try to use it.

The main reason for the wheel locks (or nuts) jamming is corrosion. There's no chance of jamming if you rotate annually or swap winter tires seasonally. Apply grease to studs and nuts every time before reattaching and you're all good. WD-40 is no good, use actual grease.

Our insurance companies require wheel locks for 17" and larger alloy wheels. I've used locks for ages with no problems except losing the key once but the tire shop found a matching key right in the first try.

The issue here isn't jamming  -  Most vehicles which get used regularly have their wheels removed often enough to prevent jamming caused by corrosion

The issue here is that when you can't find the exact 'key' to remove these @##$%^& wheel locks and you have a flat out in the boonies, you're really up the creek without a paddle  -  For every theft the locks may prevent, I'd be willing to bet there are dozens or maybe even hundreds of negative experiences like this one which has most of us wanting to make sure the wheel locks are removed before we take possession of the vehicle

In my one and only experience with wheel locks, I was able to remove them with a hammer and chisel, but that was on a different set that those which came on the TC's.  I really doubt that even hammering one of the Irwin Bolt Grip sockets that Fifty150 suggested would help  -  Those are made to remove stubborn bolts and nuts with rounded off heads.  The wheel lock studs are polished, hardened steel, perfectly round and there's nothing to grab on to

At any rate, it appears Diane has learned the same lesson many of us have with regard to wheel locks  -  While they may be a nice idea, the sense of security sure doesn't make them worth all the trouble

I get it and feel exactly the same every time I need to remove the wheels but when you're über religious about the whereabouts of the key at all times you won't have these negative experiences. I keep it next to the jack and put it right there every time I'm done with it. Then again, if my insurance didn't require it I'd probably pass too.

I heard of a Navigator with a nice set of wheels over here, the owner wanted to secure the wheels so bad he used different security nuts, just security nuts no normal ones at all. One morning the Navigator was on bricks with one brick on the driver's seat with a note "DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN".

I had the same problem. You can but a replacement key and nuts the same as the lost one for $54.99 at the ford dealership.

Give them your VIN so you get the correct one but the wheel pictured is the 17" titanium wheel same as mine.

HELP IS HERE!!. I know this is an old thread but had to tell everyone what I just went through hopefully it helps. My '14 Passenger Connect I lost the security lug key.. These are rare Ford key locks that NO ONE can get off no matter what  people say. I changed my flat tire on side of the road and when I left I left the lock on the wheel so it flew off in traffic somewhere. Went back at 5am and walked the freeway 3 miles up and down to find it no luck. Talked to 5 Discount Tires, 5 Firestones, countless machine shops with no luck. Even talked to 4 different Ford Dealerships Service Dept and parts all were basically clueless with no recommendations. Even with VIN cant order key...People mentioned Ford has the Master key so I was stumped.. I finally took the Bull by the horns, I marched angrily back to the big shop area where all the grease monkeys were and shouted loud "please help me!!" They all looked at me and 4 Mechanics walked over to this big case of Master wheel lock keys like a briefcase and 15 different combos of the same key were in there. My jaw hit the ground because 1 of them were the answer. He walked over to my van and after putting on the 1st 6, the next one fit. They all popped right off, I gave him a $20!!!!.. Folks don't listen to anyone, go to your closest Ford dealer march to the back shop and YELL.. Someone will come to the rescue.. NOW if that doesn't work and your in the Boonies EBAY has these breakthrough keys specifically for these ford keys that you slightly hammer over the lug and will come off. They are only from Great Britain so it will take 2-3 weeks but will work to and is $45 with shipping, you cant get it in the U.S. Good luck people any questions let me know

I work at a dealer, and until today, May 16, 2022, I've never seen this wheel lock style. Yelling in the shop won't help you. I know what I'm doing, and finding where to order the keys from Ford took upwards of twenty minutes. The card from the glovebox that says, "bring to the dealer" gives us no information to work with. We have three different sources for shop tools and keys (only one place supplies each tool, and Ford doesn't tell us which supplier). The nut remover from Irwin pictured above will not fit between the lock and the wheel. The left threaded lug remover from SnapOn won't fit between the lock and the wheel. If you haven't worked on one of these, please don't assume you know what tools work. And for the guy recommending grease for lug studs.. DON'T. Your lug nuts will come off. Lugs nuts and studs are made to be used dry. I absolutely agree that lug nut locks are useless for 95% of the people that have them.

Michael, thanks for you experience and insight.  It will save someone a lot of headache and heartache, buying some expensive tools, for them to not work.

Any chance that you can share the part number and/or source?  As the guy at the next dealership may not be as sharp, or motivated enough to spend 20 minutes, trying to figure out what to order.

hi, I'm dealing with this exact issue now. Can you let me know where you found this on eBay or otherwise? I'm not seeming to find it. Thanks for any help.  Alternately, if someone has a lock remover  and lives in the SF Bay Area, I'd love to borrow it.

From all the replies, the one answer that seems to work is to go to a dealership.  Maybe with all of the Fords that they work on, someone there has a key that will fit.  

 

Or go from tire shop to tire shop, hoping that someone there has a key to fit.

I've been to 2 dealerships, including the one i bought it from, who were pretty unhelpful. The other one thought they had the key, but bc there's so little space around the lugs (hubcaps don't leave a lot of space) the key couldn't get to the lug. they're willing to figure another way, but if i can get the proper remover that's preferred.
