Help - ABS / Hill Start Assist

I Found the problem!!  turns out the rear wheel sensor was not picking up the speed . it started when we had a snow storm, there is a magnetic ring in the rear wheel hub assembly.

I thought I could feel a bearing problem lately. I also have a friend who is a seasoned Ford service tech, He had told me there is a known issue with the rear speed sensor on the Ford focus/ Transit connect and it effects the transmission

Also I found while shopping for parts that rock auto had the motorcraft hub/ bearing assembly for $299.00 each, I almost lost it. On a whim I checked the dealer, They have motorcraft hubs for

$130.00 ea.  one dealer in connetuicut had them ford $105 ea.and the abs sensors for $19.00 ea. Now I'm not one to through parts at something until it's fixed and I will not pay a dealer for diagnostics. As soon as I change the right rear wheel hub and sensor

I plugged it in turned the key and all my lights were gone, no more errors. Test ride was perfect, now to reset the adaptive tables for the transmission.

I'm not a tech guy but doesn't jpbonesaw offer a working solution in the post above that might offer help for similar problems that  @Jim M and  @Mittens01 are asking about? He's saying his Ford service tech friend has identified a known issue with the rear speed sensor.  Good luck!

It's possible that the issue you're experiencing is related to a faulty wheel speed sensor. Wheel speed sensors are a crucial component in the anti-lock brake system and can cause the ABS and Hill Start Assist lights to come on if they fail or become damaged. I appear to be having the same issue. It "seems" that I was able to get rid of the hill start assist unavailable message and the traction control light went off. It may not be permanent. The ABS light is on all the time now and disconnecting the battery should not make that go away. Suspect is the wheel sensor but nobody talks about how easily that may be changed. In the driveway.

I don't know how old this thread is.

You should scan for codes. A bad wheel sensor will throw a code. Replacing the sensors look easy.

Thanks Don, that is what I will attempt tomorrow but I'm not sure the AutoZone will be able to read ABS codes. We'll see.

Do you know of any threads or "builds" that get into the replacement in any kind of detail? My old man search skills are less than stellar. not really finding much.

 

A trip to the dealership will involve dragging, kicking, screaming, cursing and perhaps violence......?

AutoZone can't read DTC (diagnostic trouble codes). You need a professional scan tool (Snap On, Autel etc) or Forscan. Replacing the sensors is simple and the manual has the two steps (partially) shown in the attached image of the previous post.

AutoZone reading comes up with Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor faults.

Changed the sensor and everything appears to be back to normal. Pretty much the easiest fix ever except that the sensor let go suddenly and I punched myself in the eye. The ABS light did not go off immediately as I would have expected but after about a few hundred feet all the lights went off. I guess it needed a signal to reset.

I have a 2014 Transit Connect and a 2013 F150.  Both have issues with the rear view backup cameras.  They function intermittently at best.  I'd like to get an Apple IOS / iPhone  compatible  scan tool capable of diagnosing rear camera backup issues.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

All smartphone scan tools like Forscan and Torque Pro will have limited diagnostic functions. You need Forscan and a Windows PC or expensive software like SnapOn, Autel etc for in depth troubleshooting. Nobody makes a full service iPhone scan tool.

It could be mechanical.  You may have to actually take apart the tailgate and the liftgate, inspect the wiring harnesses, and so forth.  Not every issue can be diagnosed with a scan tool.
