Jiquay
I've been lurking around this forum for a few months, but today I got my full-member card - 2018 XLT Wagon LWB 7-passenger Magnetic Metallic with roofrack & hitch. A little pricier than the Guard Green XL I ordered, but after 4 months' wait, Ford informed the dealer that they won't be building any more '18s even though I bought in February. Fifty150
Alright! High 5. Now let's see what you do with it first.

Jiquay
On the way home from the dealer, I swung by mom & dad's place to take them out to lunch. 67 years' married, 90 & 93 yrs old... I haven't been able to take them both out since dad gave up the Honda Odyssey 9 years ago. (The disadvantage of having a pickup truck for 10 years...) I wanted them to have the first ride in it. PhotoAl
Welcome! Nice wagon, Good to get both the hitch and the roof bars. I don't leave the hitch in the receiver just so I won't bust my shin. Congrats on your parents, not many people achieve either of those.
Jiquay
Funny how the receiver on this is a 2" - my pickup has a 1-1/4" receiver with a 3500 lb tow capacity. I like how the lighting plug is solidly fixed to the hitch, unlike the 6' snake in the bed of my truck. GK

Imagine when I have to pick her up in my arms like a child, and boost her into my F-150 w/ 6" lift kit & 35" tires. Or when I pull up to the front door of some senior center, and I have to get her down from up there. If I didn't have seniors in the family whom I transport, I would never have bought a Transit Connect. The same $$$ could have been spent on a Mustang, which is more to my liking, or a Honda Civic, which is better on gas. Unfortunately, I do not have the real estate to own and store all the cars that I would like to hord. What does Jay Leno have? An airplane hangar? That would be the ultimate dream. A warehouse big enough to store all the cars and motorcycles that you want, all the tools you need to play with them, and having all the time because you don't have to work. Jiquay
mrtn, at the grandparent level, the youngest to pass was 74 - paternal grandfather. He was born a bluebaby. He was shot in Germany in 1916. He went back to the battle & got hit with a mortar in '18 - he was placed with the dead on that day. They told my grandmother she was crazy to marry him in '23 - he was only gonna live 5 years. He met all his grandchildren! He died 50-1/2 years to the day after the WW1 medic gave him up for dead. The other 3 totalled 274 years... GK BSUPC
Fifty150
With modern medicine and advancements in technology; who knows what the future holds for the next generation. Scientist have been able to locate and extract the gene for Alzheimer's in mice. Stem cell research has crafted a technology to promote hair growth combating male pattern baldness. We now have Viagra. Your grandchildren may live well past 100. Just think that a few hundred years ago, people were lucky to reach 50. mrtn
Male pattern baldness should not be considered an issue at all. Who cares, really. I have a full head of hair but I recently buzzcut it to zero. Anybody with a receding hairline or thin patches should do the same. It's perfectly fine in the era of vindiesels and jasonstathams.

(comment dripping with sarcasm) With the population rapidly exceeding the resources of this planet, medical research is extending lifespans. I hope all these "advancements" in longevity result is a massive reduction in the ability to produce offspring. If not, the darkest science fiction future ever depicted in the movies isn't as bad as it's going to get. And sooner rather than later. BSUPC
Managed to kill Bambi on the way home Saturday morning. I may be losing my membership card. :( Man I hope they do not total this thing out.
Jiquay
I saw your pic on the top of the forum when I opened it - animal strikes leave a very distinct dent & this has it. Hope your bodyshop can find a TC in a scrapyard to get you back on the road. I drove for a courier service many years ago - we had a Plymouth Reliant that got older as it went by you. Two accidents got the front end of an '86 and the tailgate of an '84 put on this '85 wagon. GK
mrtn
I had the exact same damage to mine, identical. Was fixed by the insurance co in a few days.
Fifty150
They "total loss" not based upon driveability. It is always based upon repair estimate vs blue book value. There is front end damage that can be seen, fender, hood, bumper. Then you have what they find later, subframe, wheel alignment, cv joint, brakes, mounting tabs for lighting, radiator, cooling lines......which they will find when they start taking the car apart. Lots of little things that you don't see right away. A friend of mine got his new car repaired by a "collision repair specialist" that the insurance company used. They did not see that a transmission hose was pinched When the transmission went out, the dealership's transmission tech showed it to him, then reported it to the warranty department; who quickly denied his warranty claim because that was not a manufacturer's defect. It took the insurance company months to acknowledge that the transmission cooling line was damaged during the course of a collision, and/or pinched by the body shop during the collision repair. Then they only offered to compensate him for half the amount of the transmission replacement. He sued for full cost, plus attorney's fees. Now they are offering half the cost of transmission, and to split the court coast. I guess they have more money for lawyers, than payout settlements, and they would rather drag the case for a year or more, hoping to wear you out. mrtn
Mk1 Connect is structurally solid. I hit a wild boar on the highway with no other damage than a bent plate. The plate was the focus point so the whole energy was absorbed by the bumper. A hit like that would have reached the radiator on any standard passenger car. Mike Chell
A hit to the bumper and the airbags didn't deploy ???
mrtn
Yes, as there was no structural deformation whatsoever. Airbags don't deploy unless it's absolutely necessary. The boar(s) ran on the road from my right, I instinctively turned left to avoid them and managed to hit the last one. If I had kept my direction I would have missed it. The boar tumbled towards 11 o'clock for 20 feet and ended up in the ditch. Then got up and split.
Fifty150
Amazing that the boar got up and ran off. My brother in law hit a deer, messed up the entire front end of his new Honda, and the deer still got up and ran off. He was upset that the deer didn't die. He would have field dressed it right there while waiting for the tow truck. You could salvage a lot of good meat from fresh road kill. mrtn
Deer are higher up, landing on the hood and windshield. We have HUGE moose over here (with more than half of the country covered by forest), 7 feet high. These will effectively kill everyone in the car if hit at highway speed.
Fifty150
You would think that the height of the bumper would have broken that deer's legs, effectively preventing him from running away.
mrtn
Nope. The deer is not standing in front of the car. It's running, legs up from the ground. Remember this:
BSUPC
$4k in damages so far just from what the adjuster could see without opening the hood. I am at 50% of the 75% required to total it so far. That may go up when they pop the hood and start pulling it apart. I just hope that does not happen. I killed this deer. Went by today and it was still laying there. :( It was very small and not worth trying to claim. Maybe I will have better luck from the tree stand later this year.
