Boomerweps
The camping conversions look taller than my new 2014 TC swb wagon. We're they taller pre 2014?
mrtn
Yes, the LWB models were 4" taller.
omniphil
Pretty sure the 2013's are 9 inches taller when I measured them. It's quite a bit more headroom...
Ackerdackerly
The 2014 Transit Connects have a different body style from the pre-2014 (first generation) TCs. They have signficanly more vertical space becauee of it's substantially higher roofline as compared to the new 2014 model. I imagine that the camper conversion vendors have not released a new conversion product for the new body style. It is - to me- a shame that they made the new Transit Connects with a lower roofline... All of the great improvements with none of the spectacular roominess. Oh well....
Max
wow 9 is alot
bikinchris
Ford in one article that the older Transit would not fit in some parking garages. The 2014 has a lower roof, but also a lower floor. Not as much headroom, but I couldn't stand in the older one anyway.
kndlkstms
Ford always comes up "short". 20 horsepower everywhere , 6 inches after the rear wheels 2010-2013 TC , height 2014-5-6? TC , etc . But the GT .... short production run ?!?!?
Osco
I got front row at a light next to a gen 1, with It's 2.0 liter motor, the kid nailed the gas at the light.. I did shift Into sport but left the gearing up to the system and eased my foot down to about 85% of the way to the floor, Pulled away from the 2.0 liter and could hear it trying so hard, He gave up as I was about 4 car lengths away after about 125 feet... I basically walked away from the 2.0 liter and never crossed 4500 rpm, not sure I even crossed 4K revs actually, Smooth This Little 4 Lunger is I tellya :P 1/2 a liter makes a difference especially when coupled to the 6 speed, My first three are lower than His first two gears, I get into the power sooner and can stay in the sweet spot much easier. Campcrazy
I'm fine with my just bought 2013. The 2.0L and 4 speed is plenty peppy enough for me. I prefer the higher roof etc in the old body style. The new version doesn't seem as "unique". More like a mini van. Don't understand why ford would water down the uniqeness of this hit crossover vehicle. The gas mileage is great. Better than my last two ford rangers, one of which was a 4 cylinder 5 speed stick. Beta Don
I never considered a Transit Connect until after I saw the 2014's. The earlier ones were too tall for my liking and the 2.5L with the 6 speed w/OD gives them great gas mileage - We get right at 30 on the highway I suppose Ford made the change because sales were tapering off and they wanted more of the small passenger van market as opposed to concentrating just on the cargo van market. I love the way the rear seats come out of our SWB model in about two minutes! - It's the best of both worlds as our passenger model very quickly becomes a cargo model Don
mrtn
Ford changed the design because the Mk1 had been in production for a decade and needed a refreshment. The original is still highly regarded as a true workhorse and extremely durable compared to competition. There have always been two variants available, both cargo and passenger vans (although the seats were bolted down to the floor). Europe also got SWB/low roof. Now there are just two wheel bases, no roof difference.
103west43rd
mrtn, nice recap of the Mk1 version. Beta Don, from the US introduction of the Transit Connect in 2010, the percentage of sales increase only went up every year through the change to the second generation in 2014. Ford needed to take the Transit Connect from a mostly commercial van market to something that would also appeal to personal users. They did not have a mini-van so that is what they created, a mini-van that could be used for both commercial and personal buyers, as the Dodge Caravan mini-van has been for years. mrtn
For minivan needs they could have just brought the Galaxy and S-Max over to the US for covering the minivan need but both are also on their last leg and too "executive" in the current form. Also, neither have sliding doors which a PITA for families with kids. S-Max: Galaxy:
G B L
The us market must not have been the only reason for the up date . Ford must have decided that the line needed a change. The EU has a much greater selection of Vans. Having the Transit Custom in the line allowed Ford to streamline the Transit Connect without leaving a big hole in their offering's Edited September 3, 2016 by G B L
