Well, the story has a happy ending. Bill, the tech guy at Etrailer did not give up. He contacted the engineering people at Cequent. Cequent is one of the manufacturers of the harnesses that Etrailer sells. It so happens that the Cequent office is about 10 minutes from my home and I was invited to bring my 2016 TC Hatchback to their lab and let them work on it. Until then they had not had a hatchback to work on and were quite interested in getting at it. Their findings are that the supplied connectors are correct but finding and accessing the correct harness connector is a problem due to its "buried" location. The correct connector is difficult to see and accessing it must be done by removing the interior panels on each side. Once done, the supplied kit is correct. The correction/improvement that the Cequent guys are going to make are to the installation instructions. They used the rear terminal block as the power source and installed an in-line fuse for protection. Sooo: apologies for demonstrating my lack of expertice and dragging it out so much. My hat is off to Etrailer and Cequent for their wonderful business model. They are definitely on my preferred list.
