Van would not start, just turned over, been to garage and had new fuel filter, call today saying when primed it runs fine and starts a few hours later but if left longer fuel is running back to tank, mechanic says he does not know whats wrong but has fitted me a priming pump and to come get it, any ideas?

Did the van have trouble before the New filter? If not then it must have started at that filter?

No stopped starting before filter was fitted, he has now fitted a new filter and hand pump and it not starting at all, if you use the hand pump it starts to get stiff( the hand pump) and then goes soft again, surley this should go hard and stay hard, im not sure hes fitted it right or its not got a return valve in it, anyway hes gave up so i towed it home. He told me before he fitted this pump if he primed the diesel it was starting and run fine.

If you open the bleed fitting and turn on the pump do you get fuel out of the fitting? Sounds like a different mechanic is needed.  The fact that it is a diesel means there is an ocean between you and me  so i am only able to offer moral support.

Theres no fitting, i got it towed up the road and have been mucking about with it, can tell the hand pump he fitted has issues, anyway i sooked the fuel up a few times(nasty stuff) and got it going, hand pump not letting enough fuel through as splutters when not much load, took the hand pump out and its running perfect,  i need to wait a few hours or overnight to see if it will start again as this was seemingly the issue and reason hand pump was fitted, hes told me its a high pressure pump issue but would it run perfect if this was the case?

If the engine runs well and does not start after it sits for a while is an indication of an air leak some where in the supply line from the tank and the primary filter. if there is a leak between the lift pump and the high pressure pump then you should see a fuel leak.

Keep posting, can you get a photo of the supply fuel set up?

Right started first turn of the key this morning and everytime since, i think the fuel filter was knackered and when hes replaced it he has not primed it right or got all the air out. Fingers crossed its fixed.

Sure sign that you want a different mechanic.
