Upgrade instrument cluster 2016

Look for the Forum post about adding cruise control. It will explain what to expect when upgrading the steering wheel. Make sure you buy a steering wheel from a Transit Connect, not a Transit.

The steering wheel buttons and signals going to the radio head unit can probably be used by an aftermarket head unit. You will need the wiring diagram to find the proper wires.  Adding SYNC 2 is very complicated and expensive.

I don't think you can add the IPC and steering wheel without making some changes with Forscan, but maybe you can (especially if you don't want to activate cruise control). Do some research and take your time. Not of lot of people have done these upgrades.

So far with the info i found in the forum the ipc swap seem to be plug and play but for the steering wheel swap I will need one from another TC and will need to activate the cruise control using forscan. I hope the right side buttons for the radio works with an aftermarket Android unit

This thread inspired me to do the swap too.

Here's my swap.

Original:

IMG_1382.thumb.jpg.4b3a678e70e2b7c6ce5fee70f9445c17.jpg

Dumped the 24C32F EEPROM from my original cluster and transferred mileage details (0xF54 to 0xF67) to the new one.

IMG_1372.thumb.jpg.cb9d6ee808aa7d750d17c66a4ff4ca5d.jpg

Original monochrome cluster's EEPROM is right on the back. Easy access.

IMG_1370.thumb.jpg.23bdd2965856c1241b570a46f3b9a005.jpg

Color LCD display's EEPROM was on the other side so complete disassembly of cluster including gauges required for access.

Done!

IMG_1379.thumb.jpg.3c5cd73af1df362962e0233652357f10.jpg

Pretty fun and straight forward mod!

I am trying to do the same but i have a few questions...  the cloning of the EEPROM is just for the mileage? if not what else is included because mine was already replaced when i bought my TC 2015 and now i´m trying to add the CC and the options buttos on the steering wheel.

I have plenty knowledge working with EEPROM´s since tv´s use this type of memory so i just need some light about what is exactly that we are copying with this.

also if my TC doesnt have the original one how can i get the real mileage of it because i was thinking that the mileage was storage in other of the modules.

if that configuration has something to do with the buttons options should i get one CLuster that came with those buttos configuration from Ford or what?

please some light in this and thank you

Hey everyone...!

I have a 2014 TC , XL

With no Cruise control, steering wheel has no buttons either, and the speedometer has the tiny screen.

I want to change the speedometer with the big screen to have Trip 1 and Trip 2 also the big digital speedometer...!

Also I know I will need the steering wheel with buttons to control the speedometer screen...

My question is....

If I swap the steering wheel with the one with buttons,

this would be plug and play..?

What else I will need to complete this swap..

I want to find one steering wheel with buttons in both sides because I want to upgrade the radio with a touch screen android unit or may be one sync 3

Also I have the forscan already installed in my computer and know how to use it..

did you get somewhere else with this? i have a TC 2015 XL and i´m trying to do the same as you... i already sswap steering wheel and it doesnt work plug and play lol.. we need to do some extra configurations about it in forscan

Hi Jmariano,

No, I haven't done the swap yet, but I will do soon. I want to change the instrument cluster with the one with the screen like the titanium model and also want to change my steering wheel with the one with buttons in both side and cruise control buttons...

I have a TC 2014 XL

Hi All,

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this, but its such an awesome thread that i wanted to be involved with you all on it. I don't want to hijack the thread but this is the only forum I have found taking about this

I want to do this swap in a 2015 Transit full size.

I just got the vehicle a month ago and have been scouring the internet the whole time trying to figure out how to reprogram to add digital speed readout to the IPC. ( it may yet be possible, but haven't found anything yet )

i came across this article and see that a different display solves the problem in your case..

I'm super impressed with what you were all Able to figure out here and wish mine was so straight forward.

I have the 4.2" center radio display, sync with myford but a smaller opening for the IPC.

Thanks to "Windguys" step by step, I was able to locate the proper unit.

i don't see any transits that have the larger size opening for this type of display, and have visually  checked all the model numbers on LKQ and don't believe any transit even offers the larger display.

IF ( and that's a big if ) I am able to modify the cluster are to allow for the larger screen, do you think this Connect display might work in my transit. and do you know anyone that can do the programming or would I be able to figure it out with forscan ( brand new to forscan)

im fairly tech savy and good at customizing stuff,   but it looks like a steep hill to climb at first to come up to speed on using forscan

I'm even wondering if its possible to use the entire connect Cluster and surrounding pieces. that would obviously take a bit of research on my part.

the bottom looks like it my be compatible, so might just need other trims pieces.

any thoughts , opinions , advice  anyone can offer would be awesome.

Chris

A Transit Connect IPC will not work in a Transit. The two vehicles use different architecture in their networks. I was able to use a Focus IPC in a TC because they are built on the same platform...mechanical and electrical.

Your best bet is to find the premium versions of the Transit and see what options are available compared to yours. Then you can begin a similar process of sourcing the parts and testing the programming. I looked into this for a friend several years ago and saw there is a premium IPC for the 2014 Transit. My brief research showed it should be easy to upgrade with this IPC.

You may have to compare the configuration files of the two IPCs to see what is different and may need to be changed. This is relatively easy, but my guess is it will be plug and play.

Don,

Thanks for the update and Info. Great Info.

I actually found an image similar to the one you posted late last night but it only showed  it as being a part of the European transit Custom.

this has been an exercise in frustration. I have spent countless hours researching this and the Transit forum community is borderline non-existent .

most of my searches mainly show the "connect" even though I add search phrases  to not allow the word "Connect".

I am struggling to find the available options packages for that year ( or any year other than brand new ) to even know what to look for. seriously cant believe how many hours I have spent looking and not getting any closer.

Did your friend have any luck or Bail on the idea. ?

FYI... You are an awesome Member of your transit community. I have seen how active, knowledgeable, Resourceful and helpful you are in your "connect" community and they are lucky to have you

Seattle Chris,

What model/year is your van? I searched ebay, LKQ and other sites for photographs of the color display IPC. It looks like the 2015 Transit 250 has part number CK4T-10849 - BB to BK. The B suffix appears to identify the color display. I found one on LKQ.

My buddy never proceeded with the upgrade but I remember doing some research and it looked straight forward.

I'll send you a PM with my contact info so we don't clog this thread with too much detail.

I also use Autotrader to find good photos of optional equipment and the VIN so we can get the configuration files to compare the standard vs upgraded IPC configuration files.

Hello Don, you said Focus and TC have the same platform and you put a Focus IPC in a TC..?

What about the Escape..? Have the same platform like Focus and TC...?

If I fine a Escape IPC would work in my TC...? Or better find one from a TC or Focus only..?

The safe answer is: I don't know. During my research I looked at the configuration data on some Escape clusters and I recall it was very similar. But in the world of computers "almost the same" is not good enough. You really need to find a cluster from a TC. The Focus cluster is not the same size and won't fit properly. The only reason I tried one was it was cheap and I was experimenting.

If you need help finding a TC cluster in the US I can help. Let me know

Ok Don, thank you for the info.

Yes I'm looking for one ipc and leather steering wheel with buttons on both sides, I'm using car-part.com I sent few emails already but not everyone respond.

Do you know what is the difference between this 2 screens ?

Different years?

Different trims?

I want the one with the black background.

Car-part.com has a lot to choose from. You should call them on the phone because many junkyards don't use the internet too much and are small operations. Plus you can request a photo to ensure you are getting the right part.  I did a quick search and found some from $55-100.

I don't know the difference in the screens. The bottom one matches my 2016 (and also 2014 and 2015) cluster. It definitely looks like a TC cluster because it shows a van instead of a car. The top one may be a newer version because the color cluster became standard on all TCs in 2018 or 2019.***EDIT** this is incorrect. 2019 is a different style****

FYI, only the Titanium trim TCs from 2014-2016 had color clusters but the leather steering wheel was available on the XLT. You need a 2014, right?

Yes , my TC is 2014.

I found one ipc from Canada at $95 free shipping,  I'm tenting it is from a 2014 TC titanium but is in Kilometers,  I think I could change it to miles using forscan changing the canada region to USA... !?!?

What do you think?

Because about the background in Kilometers probably I can swap the background from my ipc in miles to that one...

I have not changed km to miles. But during my research I was testing IPC settings from a European (Czech maybe) TC and changing the setting changed miles to km. I did not verify everything was km. This info and maybe some Forscan settings in the BCM (main) should work. But I would pay a little extra if I could find a US version just for peace of mind and the hassle of maybe changing the dials (you have to pry the needles off and they may break). These look promising.2014ipc.thumb.JPG.94657ab0941fab0afc12c2d698006eae.JPG

After much research and testing, I found the answer to this question. The color cluster was never offered on anything except the Titanium trim levels in 2014-2017 (also rare in non-Ti 2018). Titanium trim includes SYNC3. A color cluster appears to get some information from the SYNC3 system that involves the cluster information screen.  When a color cluster is installed in a non-SYNC3 vehicle, this information is missing and it causes the information screen to display in blue tones. The color cluster information screen was designed to have a black background and border.

I found a setting in the IPC that affects the cluster information screen. The good news is we can change the setting to get the black background information screen. The bad news is this setting removes some information used by the cluster to display the “welcome” screen and Ford logo. The new setting creates a blank screen when there should be an animated blue-box welcome screen followed by the Ford logo. The welcome screen only appears when you first enter the vehicle. Once you turn the key, the black background screen appears.

If you want the black background screen, change the following in the IPC

720-03-01            xxxx   7xxx          (keep all numbers the same and just insert a 7 in the noted location)

For example, 720-03-01 in my IPC was: 2901   6004  and I changed it to 2901   7004.

I also noted one of the settings affected the compass display on the information screen.

720-03-01            xxxx   xxXx          X=0 compass is displayed

                                                                X=1 compass is not displayed

Wow , super useful information ?

I already installed my new ipc and have the welcome and the ford logo because my TC has nothing about sync, just had the am/fm basic radio..

Also if you see my IPC I don't have the compass on it, I guess is because I have no sync modules....

The "blank" welcome screen is not a mistake or missing data. Watch this video from a 2014 Fusion. The only difference is the TC blank screen will stay illuminated until the welcome display times out (about 25 seconds) or the key is turned.

Plus the blue tone screen was the stock screen on Focus around 2014.

Here is my before and after pictures.

Everything working,  just need to update later the mileage to the actual and will play a little with the asbuilt to change the black background to compare.
