You are utilizing more than one connecting point to the vehicle compared to the single connection of the tow hook. It is strongly advised that one tows with the hook with caution. That hook threads in to the front bumper brace and will easily come off. I knew a guy with a Jeep Renegade that thought his threaded tow hook was a legitimate off road tow hook. Learned a lesson that day Yes The eye is for recovery only!! The days of towing vehicle with a chain around a bumper bracket are long gone. G B L
Definitely the Hitch. The Tow hook is to get you out of the ditch with limited damage to the vehicle. If the vehicle damage is slight, drive on, if not Ramp Truck.
BSJBSJ
Sheesh! I have no intention of towing anything or being towed! I just wanted to know which was the better rated option for being recovered or recovering someone else that is lightly stuck...

And then there's the obvious observation that the hitch is on the back and the recovery eye is on the front.
BSJBSJ
There's one on the back too, on my 2021. Edited February 17, 2022 by BSJBSJ

If you have the factory trailer hitch, then there's no recovery hook port in the rear bumper. The bumper cover does have the port though. We discussed this issue about 5-6 years ago. BSJBSJ
I installed the hitch myself...
G B L
The factory hitch and the aftermarket hitch are constructed differently . On a factory hitch the tow hook position is no longer usable.
Chip
New member here, churning up old threads. My Ford dealer was clueless about the recovery hook and I ended up getting one from Amazon. I haven't found a place to stash it, and maybe it can go in that jack bag, which I've never taken out. I wanted it for two reasons. The whole front end is plastic, and I wanted a tie off point for when there is a canoe on the roof. And the second reason is that the Connect doesn't have much ground clearance. I can see myself driving some remote dirt road and high-centering the vehicle. I try to be careful, but... On such roads I'll carry a 100' timber rope, a hand winch, and the recovery hook. Hopefully, it's like how carrying an umbrella keeps the rain at bay, and I'll never use it. BSJBSJ

My 2015 Cargo has a holder for the hook near the jack. Perhaps your model year has the same.
