Can I add OEM Cruise control to vehicle that came without it

It appears that the latest version of Forscan has problems connecting to all modules. If you have an older model TC (14-18ish) try an older version of Forscan

Make sure you are using a good adapter. OBD Link never is the source of connection problems.

Delete the vehicle profile and have Forscan create a new one.

When I was getting the (service procedure has been interrupted) message it was because there was a problem with Forscan. My 2021 Connect was too 'new' at the time.

I contacted the developers and they had me send log files to them. They fixed the software and issued an update that fixed my issues. Which were unrelated to swapping steering wheels, so I don't know if yours is the same problem...

i will try to contact them to see if they can do something because in order to turn on the options for the CC i need to be able to get into the main configuration of the BCM and my TC is 2015 so is not that new

I had problems with that service interruption thing a couple weeks ago when I needed to reprogram my BCM for OE tire size (I was running 215/65R16 for a few years), after updating to the newest version at the time, 2.3.43. As a test, I removed x.43 and downloaded/installed 2.3.41 off their website and it worked perfectly fine on my 2015; I didn't try 2.3.42, so I can't say if it's affected by the issue or not. Going back a version or two is the quickest and easiest way to go, IMO.

  • 3 months later...

I am looking to add cruise to my 2017 Connect and am going to start looking for a steering wheel.

I have a couple questions:

1. Does it matter what year the steering wheel comes from?

2. Has anyone figured out if the steering wheel radio controls can be turned on if you have the base radio?

I know nothing about Forscan so I will need to do some research on it.  Honestly, I'm a little nervous to try and program the computer myself and thought about seeing what a dealer would charge.

1. A 2014-2018 steering wheel should work. But there are many 2017s available and I would choose one just to be sure. Check car-part.com. Leather wheels are around $125 and non-leather are about $75.

2. I have done some configuration of the stock head unit (ACM) and there are some settings that may need to be changed to use the controls on the steering wheel. These changes are easily made with Forscan but you may need to do a little research (this is easy to do). There is a good chance it all works assuming the wiring harness is there. You can check the ACM wiring to see if the steering wheel signals are wired to the unit.

3. Forscan.....this is messy now. The developer is a person or group in Russia. They had to suspend purchase of an "extended license" that allows changes like activating cruise control. There has always been a free extended license that is good for two months but forum users are reporting a delay in Forscan issuing the licenses. Things may get worse as Putiin continues his terrible war.

It is unlikely a dealer will or can make the configuration changes to activate cruise control. Their software is designed to restore programming that already existed in a vehicle.

Don,

I appreciate the reply and info!

1.) I will probably go non-leather with cruise and radio controls if there is a chance I can turn the radio controls on- that would be awesome!!

2.) When you say assuming the wiring harness is there, do you mean steering wheel wiring harness or radio wiring harness?

3.) That stinks about Forscan!  I was considering learning the Forscan software if I had time but that sounds like it might not be an option at this point.  Since others have reported a delay in getting the license, I may just go ahead and put in for it now in case I do decide to use it it.  Can Forscan be used on more than one vehicle?  I live in Cincinnati OH and considered paying someone that is familiar with Forscan to program my TC.

Thanks again

Here are some wiring diagrams. Your ACM needs to have the ICAN network wires and the 4" screen (FCDIM) to read the steering wheel signals. The attached wiring diagrams show ACM configurations with and without the ICAN wires.  If you ACM is the base unit without the FCDIM it's not possible to activate the steering wheel controls.

Here's a portion of what I found on car-part.com. You have to call these junkyards directly and shipping is not included.

Hello 69droptop,

If you have the base FM/AM radio I don't think the steering wheel buttons would work because that the same radio I had and in my 2014 TC the radio harness plug doesn't have the wires for the buttons to works.

I'm waiting for my leather steering wheel with cruise and radio buttons is on the mail and should arrive today. So in few day I will tell you my experience with the steering wheel swap...!

Jseda,

Thanks for the info!

I think I just have the base AM/FM radio; it does have AUX in but I bet that is standard.

Do you still have the base AM/FM radio?  It would be great if you could let me know how your steering wheel swap goes!!

Did you have to buy an adapter to make the radio fit the dash?  If you are able to post a picture of it installed that would be awesome!  I wouldn't mind upgrading my radio, especially if the steering wheel controls work!!

Yes , you need some adapters

Radio harness, antenna adapter and the facia for double din radios.

Post a photo of your radio to see which one you need

Your radio looks nice, I'm sure it's much better than the factory radio.  Yes, please let me know how your steering wheel swap goes and if your able to make the radio controls work.  I have attached a picture of the same radio that I have.

I might have a steering wheel that will work for you.  My 2014 came with factory cruise and I replaced the OEM steering wheel with another OEM wheel which is leather wrapped and has the audio controls also  -  My original one was just vinyl and doesn't have the audio controls.  I bought the leather one on eBay for $125

Don

Did you get the audio controls to work?

I just did this swap on my '14 xlt wagon (single disk radio, no sync) but don't know what to alter in as-built with forscan as I didn't see an option for "radio control"

my vin is NM0GS9F71E1153342 (and the vin of the steering wheel is NM0LS7F72G1272930 and is a cargo van with sync)

I have the radio that looks like the pic below. No sync, no HD or satellite to my knowledge, and it uses only 1 of the c240 connectors on the acm (the box the cd goes into)

18_TRANCC_CenterStack_mn.jpgI

Check this picture attached,  this is a picture from my radio plug C240A if you see cable #14 brown/green and #15 Blue/white then you don't have the I-can network in that plug.. if you have #14 Blue/Grey and #15 Violet/Grey then you have the I-can network in C240A plug

I don't know what is  "Mechless" and "Without Mechless"

My TC is Mechless and I don't have the I-can network in my radio plug C240A

yeah I have violet gry and blue grey in my c240a (mine requires a canbus thing for aftermarket radio like a Metra XSVI-5524-NAV)

mechless means no disk drive, so without mechless means with disk drive.

I also have the 4 inch screen above

Thanks for the clarification about Mechless.

I had the fm/am radio and no 4" screen.

Now I'm happy with my android 8" screen headunit,  I just need to find the I-Can wires inside the dash to connect them to my radio.. !

So in my opinion if you installed the steering wheel with radio controls and doesn't work, I think your radio doesn't have that option internally even if you have the I-Can wires in the C240A plug...!?!?

Do you have factory backup camera..? And you can see the image in that screen..?

yes i got factory backup and it shows in the 4 inch screen.
I know with focus's and f150s they have to go into forscan to enable radio control when they upgrade steering wheels.

I compared my asbuilt and the steering wheel donor vehicle asbuilt and there are some changes in the FCDIM (front control display interface module) but I am not sure which values correspond to the radio buttons and I don't have a "good" obd reader to see all the modules on forscan yet.

Also I don't think you can just tap the ican signals and route them to the android headunit, I think you need a canbus box to decode those. maybe something like this https://www.ugar-hk.com/product-page/ford-oem-harness-with-canbus-for-ugar-head-units but I don't know if this works with the default AM/FM mechless option.

Go into central configuration main , I just found few settings about what radio you have.. maybe is something there you have to change..?!?!
