2016 factory AM/FM question >>>

I have the basic AM/FM stereo in my 2016 XL but I’m wanting the SYNC unit with small display above it. Is that a straight up swap with the dash I have? Also, does the small display work with the factory back up camera I’m wanting to install as well? Thanks!

Adding SYNC1 is not simple. You will need to add a module along with the display. The configuration in the vehicle will have to be programmed with Forscan. I doubt anyone has done this because it's expensive and there are no instructions. It's easier to install an aftermarket head unit with all the desired functions.

The small display is used by the factory backup camera. Here is the network connection overview.

No.  You will need the dash with the cutout for the screen.  The center curved hump of the dashboard pulls out.  Then there are bolts which hold the front of the dash that fits the radio.  Then there are probably more bolts which hold the radio down.  Remove the radio.  That is the easy part.

You may not have any of the correct harnesses.  Or maybe not.  I'm not really sure if all of the radio harnesses are the same.  With luck, the van's security system is not integrated with the radio head unit, and you can still start and drive the van without the radio.  But you'll need to remove the OEM radio, to see what it looks like behind the dash.  Then source whatever it is that you want, and see if you have the correct wire harnesses.

The radio is connected to a computer in the car.  There will be some programming involved.

It works with the factory camera.

But this will not be simple.  It's not like an aftermarket camera installation.  The camera is not a video cable and power wire, running to the stereo.  The camera goes to one of the computers in your car.  The computer sends the image to the screen.

any certain brands on touchscreen units and backup cameras?

Crutchfield will have a lot of that information.  A lot of those aftermarket radios are sold with the camera, GPS, and WiFi.  Everything will be included.  You will get instructions for installing.

There's a guy in Britain doing these conversions (Sync2/3) and it's expensive, to the level of the best aftermarket units.

Yes, I see on the Forscan forums many have upgraded their Sync systems. But I have never seen posts about going from nothing to Sync1.  Even Sync1 to 2 seems impossible. There is a third party company that has streamlined the hardware and programming changes for the 2 to 3 upgrade (Cyan Labs) if anyone is interested.

The guy I mentioned does all kinds of conversions, even from the basic radio to Sync3 and everything between. He posts about it periodically in the facebook group.

I installed the metra kit and also a double din head unit, with Android auto, only to find out that the glare during the day is HORRIBLE! Also, at night, the lights from lamposts, signage, etc. Wish they would have come up with a design that wasn't quite so angled. The new 2019 TC with sync 3 tablet design is great. No glare. I'm now working on installing that system.

This is my setup in TC XL 2014.

No glare problems.

The best option in my opinion would be a Single Din unit with 8 or 9 inches floating screen Android headunit.

Mine is 8 inches screen
