Welcome to The Party

How is that even possible?  Who did you buy it from?

I have a 1994 Mazda Miata that I've owned for 20 years.  It had 11,000 miles on it when I bought it and it only has 60,000 on it now.  Lived in a garage (with the top down) every day of it's life . . . . the ragtop and plastic back window both look pretty much brand new.  Since it's a convertible, I almost always drove it with the top down only on sunny days  -  In 'non-convertible weather' I drove something else

Welcome to The Party

I got it from a guy who buys up fleets.  This one came from Monterrey County, and was some kind of water district vehicle.  They bought it new in late 2009 and titled it in February 2010.  I don't know how that works, but the title said 73 miles when it joined the county fleet.  You can tell from some of the scuffs on the interior plastic that it was not driven by its owner, but it's pretty clear it doesn't have much use on it.  The one issue is that somebody backed into it and mashed up the right front fender, headlight, and the bumper cover.  I have to get that fixed.  Once it's all said and done, it won't be a screaming deal, but it will be a pretty good one.  I"ll be dropping it off at the body shop tomorrow morning.  The motorcycle fits, barely, which is all I was concerned about from a size standpoint.  The motorcycle is a DRZ 400, which is the rain/miserable weather bike.  I ride all the time, so the TC will probably still have under 100K on it in ten years.  Can't beat that.

There was a service sticker on the windshield that said the county had serviced it at 23K miles in May, 2018, about a week before they decided it was a surplus vehicle.  I'll probably get all the fluids changed, anyway.  That includes oil, coolant, and transmission fluid.  I'll probably take it to a dealer to check for any recalls or service bulletins it should have had.  I don't expect any, but it's cheap insurance.  Besides, it mostly sat from May until now, so a little refreshing couldn't hurt it.

My wife went for a ride in it with me today for the first time.  She didn't like it the first time she say it.  It was filthy in and out.  I gave it a bath and now it looks far better and doesn't smell like dust and oil inside.  Her comment was that she thought she could probably drive it.  The van it replaces is a Chevy Express.  She won't drive that one, and I don't blame her.  It is enormous.  She's pretty insistent that I put side windows in it.  Side cameras might be a better way to go, so that's the reason for the other post.  She didn't like that idea, so it will get side windows and a backup camera.  Then it will get used a couple times a week to haul band equipment, PA gear, and things like that.  It didn't live a hard life as a county vehicle as far as I can tell, and it won't live a hard life from now on.

They are fun little bikes.  And the police are insanely good riders.  I cannot do half of what they can do.  The great thing about a DRZ is that it will go anywhere.  It causes a different kind of bad behavior from the bad behavior the Daytona encourages.

Van is at Maaco.  Fixing it will cost more than I had expected, and way, way more than I had hoped.  That was a risk I took, but it will all come out in the wash if I take care of the van.  It was built in September 2009, based on the data plate.  I assume it was built in Turkey, but the body shop said some of them were built in Mexico.  I don't know how you can tell.
