2020 TC Engine misfire and stutter - transmission issue?

Recommended Posts

First time posting here.  I have a 2020 XLT that I purchased used from dealer with 60k miles on it.  Really happy about it at first, but 4 months later, it start having misfire issues at low RPM and low speed.  The misfire seems to go away once I get to the highway.  It also only happens when the engine is warmed up.

I did the usual, such as changing spark plugs and coil boots, cleaning the GDI and throttle body, to no avail.  I took the car to two mechanics and both noted the engine stutter but no code.  I did notice some dried up yellow gunk in one of the cylinders.  The coolant level dropped on a hot day and needed to be topped off.  So I was at first suspecting an engine issue.

I finally took the car to the dealer, and they just came back to me that it is a transmission issue.  They are working with the service contract to cover the cost for replacing the whole transmission at $9k.  Apart from the price tag... really?  Transmission issue?  I am hoping I can get some second opinion from you all.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

6F35 transmission is designed to use Mercon LV/Dexron VI  (or 100% compatible) fluid, nothing else. Both work fine as these are the OEM products for this transmission and are cheap. There is no need to go searching an alternative fluid unless it's a supply issue.

In case you may or may not know, the Ford transmission in these vans has been known to have a shuddering issue. Ford says this is "normal" and nothing to be concerned about. This is after speaking with 3 different ford dealerships. So unless they (the dealership) knows something we don't there's no cure for this shuddering. I would however locate a different transmission shop that uses the BG Products, assuming you're still able to drive the van. We keep putting this off, But some time we're going to have to have the BG products flush filled done tot he van via a locate AAMCO. We had to contact AAMCO cooperate to confirm that they offer this services as it would take an adapter for the Ford transit connect.

GBL did a write up which you may find helpful.   Very comprehensive.  There are several threads on this forum about the 6F35, Mercon LV, etc.

Here is the post I did on the Transmission Change.

The hardest part of this operation will be getting the TC Jacked up. Should be almost level . Remove the Under body dust shield . Look for the Drain Plug. 11 mm or 7/16 wrench.

Trans Drain Plug Small.jpg ] Trans fill vent General Location Small.jpg Trans Vent Cap 1Small.jpg

This style funnel will slide down into the Vent plug you just removed Put 3 quarts of fluid in

[attacjpg] ] Trans funnel small.jpg

Run the TC for 5 to 10 minutes . Then drain the fluid again. Repeat this 2 more times You have Now used 9 quarts of fluid.

Put the Drain plug back in make it snug this time. Add 3 quarts of fluid You have now used 12 quarts.

Go under the car and Look for the indicator plug (14 mm wrench) Loosen the plug. Do not remove yet

Trans Fluid Level indicator Plug Small.jpg

Start the engine with the engine running and the Car in park pull the plug and add fluid into the funnel until it just drips out the Indicator hole Replace plug put the Dust shield on , Pull the funnel and replace the vent cap. Total Fluid 13 Qts. With most of number 13 left

There is no filter to change on this operation and the type of fluid is Mercon LV.

Have fun!
