Rodduz
Hi, 56 plate mk1 won't start in the cold. Failed the other day, battery ran to flat. Went and bought a starter packsmd it started a bit later on when not as cold. Left running for a bit. Came to start her today and same again, turning over but not catching. Have put battery pack on but still won't start in the cold. New glow plugs? Also what CCA should the battery have? mrtn
If the only symptom is not starting in cold then the obvious and cheapest fix is replacing the glow plugs. I did mine when there was only one functional one left. Replaced all, the plugs were around €10/pop.

I noticed that spark plugs have tripled or quadrupled in price. Or more, depending on the brand and model. A few years back, Autolite had a rebate program. $3 back per spark plug. Somehow, Amazon had a pack of 4 spark plugs for $9.64. I now have enough spark plugs to go 300,000 miles. That will never happen again in my lifetime. The current price for the same spark plugs is $29.38.
mrtn
Well, they're worth every penny. Usually last 150K+ miles.
G B L
If the engine is designed to have glow plugs then keeping them functional is not an option. Some diesels are designed to have them some are not.
