bike haulers; what fits how.
WillMartin replied to Paul Hauser's topic in Cargo, Hauling, Towing & Upfit Packages
I just had a Suzuki DRZ 400 in the back of a 2010 TC. The seats were all the way back, and it fit. The front tire was against the right side B-pillar and the back of the passenger's seat. The forks were turned to lock and the back of the bike angled across the cargo bay to the left corner. It was a tight fit, but it worked. The next problem was getting an 8' ramp in with it. That did poke through and provide me with an arm rest, but it also fit. Fitting motorcycles was my only concern as far as cargo size. The second gen LWB is long enough, but not quite tall enough for the DRZ. The DRZ is also longer than my Daytona 675, which I haven't carried yet, but ought to fit without the same level of complication. With the passenger seat pulled forward, it would have fit easier, but I didn't think of that at the time. -
That's completely reasonable and makes as much sense as anything else. If any heat comes up, it can be the cold pizza warming chamber, too.

I just bought four used Focus wheels from Ebay. $208 for the set seems like a decent risk to take. If they don't fit for some reason, I'll just sell them. Then windows for the sides and maybe GT stripes. I really like the way those convert a plain white van into a far better looking machine without painting the whole body. I just don't know what it would look like on a first gen yet.

Top 5 Things About Your Transit Connect
WillMartin replied to OLDSCHOOLFOOL's topic in Lounge Transit Connect
Nice that they have separate signs for horses, cows, and wildlife. Your windshield responds differently when each of those comes flying through after a collision. Hump road? Hmmm... -
No, I'm not sure I have the right year. I'll check again. Thanks. I may be having a DOH! moment. The 2012-2014 Focus wheels are turning up as 5x108 now. I don't know what I did yesterday.
-
Also, I'm thinking about putting 2012/2013 Focus wheels on my TC. I assume they will fit. Actually, I'm confused. Wheel-size.com says the TC is 5x108. They say Fusion and Focus are 5x114.3. So, do you need adapters or do they fit? I'm officially confused now.

Thanks. Mine is Turkish by VIN.

2010 cargo - there's an odd cavity on the top of the dashboard that I can't figure out. It looks like somebody took the hood scoop off of a hot rod or something, and turned it into part of the dashboard. The scoop faces toward the seats, so I guess you could use it as a place to put a clipboard. I thought it was a heater vent, but I can't find any openings in it with my fingers. I haven't shined a light down there yet. Any ideas what that is for or why it is there? I can accept that it's a mystery to keep dorks like me busy wondering what it is, as long as somebody can confirm.

For what its worth, I just bought a 2010 TC. It was built in November 2009, so it's maybe a 2009 if it was in Europe even though it was sold as a 2010 in California when it was new. It is a cargo van, and has a rubber mat in the back. The van doesn't smell great inside. The closest smell I can think of is the smell of rubber and other parts in a motorcycle dealership. I'm absolutely sure that the smell is the rubber mat in the back, even though it is now nine years old. I have not had the van long enough to decide if the smell bothers me or not, but I'm 100% sure it's the rubber mat.

The shop that's fixing the new to me dented Transit Connect asked where it was built. I thought they were all built in Turkey, but the estimator said some were built in Mexico. She said the city of Seattle bought a fleet of them a while ago, and when they come in for work, it's always an adventure figuring out what parts fit. Apparently there are minor differences between Turkish and Mexican Transit Connects. Anybody know anything about this? It doesn't make any practical difference, but I sure am curious.

Sounds familiar. I would have liked a Metris, but a TC does what I need it to do at a much lower price. Drums, bass, upright bass, and PA equipment. Sometimes all at the same time. Occasionally a motorcycle. It's not heavy so much as bulky.

*shrug* ...Florida. That explains everything.

Top 5 Things About Your Transit Connect
WillMartin replied to OLDSCHOOLFOOL's topic in Lounge Transit Connect
Mine is a 2010, and I haven't even got through a full tank of fuel yet. I expect it will do far better than the 2002 Chevy Express it replaces. It better! Plus, my wife will be able to drive it. She wouldn't drive the Chevy. It's about the same noise level inside as the Chevy. It feels a whole lot more like a small car to drive, because that's really what it is. Driving it is similar to driving my wife's Prius C in a lot of ways, except it can haul all kinds of things. The low deck and high roof make it easier to move around inside than in the much bigger Chevy, and the roof is still an inch or more lower. For what it's worth, it is a cargo van with white bumpers. It has XLT trim and fancy stuff. -
I like the GT stripes a whole lot! I'll have to think about what those would look like on an earlier one. It sure beats plain white, and sure would be more cost effective and better looking than painting the outside a different color.

They are fun little bikes. And the police are insanely good riders. I cannot do half of what they can do. The great thing about a DRZ is that it will go anywhere. It causes a different kind of bad behavior from the bad behavior the Daytona encourages. Van is at Maaco. Fixing it will cost more than I had expected, and way, way more than I had hoped. That was a risk I took, but it will all come out in the wash if I take care of the van. It was built in September 2009, based on the data plate. I assume it was built in Turkey, but the body shop said some of them were built in Mexico. I don't know how you can tell.

That looks pretty slick. I may try to do something like that.

I got it from a guy who buys up fleets. This one came from Monterrey County, and was some kind of water district vehicle. They bought it new in late 2009 and titled it in February 2010. I don't know how that works, but the title said 73 miles when it joined the county fleet. You can tell from some of the scuffs on the interior plastic that it was not driven by its owner, but it's pretty clear it doesn't have much use on it. The one issue is that somebody backed into it and mashed up the right front fender, headlight, and the bumper cover. I have to get that fixed. Once it's all said and done, it won't be a screaming deal, but it will be a pretty good one. I"ll be dropping it off at the body shop tomorrow morning. The motorcycle fits, barely, which is all I was concerned about from a size standpoint. The motorcycle is a DRZ 400, which is the rain/miserable weather bike. I ride all the time, so the TC will probably still have under 100K on it in ten years. Can't beat that. There was a service sticker on the windshield that said the county had serviced it at 23K miles in May, 2018, about a week before they decided it was a surplus vehicle. I'll probably get all the fluids changed, anyway. That includes oil, coolant, and transmission fluid. I'll probably take it to a dealer to check for any recalls or service bulletins it should have had. I don't expect any, but it's cheap insurance. Besides, it mostly sat from May until now, so a little refreshing couldn't hurt it. My wife went for a ride in it with me today for the first time. She didn't like it the first time she say it. It was filthy in and out. I gave it a bath and now it looks far better and doesn't smell like dust and oil inside. Her comment was that she thought she could probably drive it. The van it replaces is a Chevy Express. She won't drive that one, and I don't blame her. It is enormous. She's pretty insistent that I put side windows in it. Side cameras might be a better way to go, so that's the reason for the other post. She didn't like that idea, so it will get side windows and a backup camera. Then it will get used a couple times a week to haul band equipment, PA gear, and things like that. It didn't live a hard life as a county vehicle as far as I can tell, and it won't live a hard life from now on.

My new to me van is a 2010 TC cargo van with no windows in the sliding doors or back. Has anybody mounted side vision cameras to deal with blind spots? If so, where did you put them and how does the display work? Thanks.

I just bought a 2010 TC cargo van with less than 24K miles on it. I know absolutely nothing about Transit Connects, except that it is the right size and shape for what I do. I don't need a full size van any more, so here I am.
