slantflat
Hi everyone. 2010 Transit Connect. Has anyone done anything different with the radio antenna? Sitting front and center on the roof is a bit awkward, and my radio doesn't seem to get very good reception. The front part of my roof needs painting and I thought this would be the perfect time to do something different.\ Any ideas? Thanks everyone. mrtn
Did you check the back of your radio for antenna connection? The antenna should be good enough, never had any reception problems. The first and easiest thing is to try another antenna (just try to top part without the base first). Any off the shelf antenna with a 5 or 6 mm (don't recall, seems to be standard) thread should fit. Ask for recommendations from specialists. I broke mine off some time and replaced it with the base. Made a 2" H-shaped incision in the headliner, pushed the "flaps" in and unbolted the antenna. Make sure to use a magnetic wrench bit so the bolt won't fall behind the insulation. Not too hard to get it out if it does tho. Hook or tie the antenna cable before removing the bolt completely so you wan't have to fish it if it moves around or falls in some crack. You can close the H-shaped incision afterwars and not even notice it's there.
slantflat
You know what's funny, when I drove to Florida, once I was outside the Atlanta area the radio actually sounded pretty good. My big thing is wanting to relocate the antenna. It's in a pretty dumb spot, and I can see it getting broke off pretty easily. So when you replaced your antenna did you put it in exactly the same spot or move it somewhere else?
mrtn
Same spot. I contemplated relocating it but not because of reception issues, I wanted to have the whole "forehead" for advertising space. I mostly listen to online streaming sources so radio is rather non-relevant for me. The antenna base has like a depressed spot for it, so even if you plug the bolt hole when relocating you'll have a visible, egg-shaped placeholder there. BSUPC
Here is a picture of the inside porting of the radio antenna. This is with the shelve and head liner removed. I left the picture its original size so you could see a better detail of it. You can also see the egg shaped indention that mrtn mentioned of where the actual antenna sits.
