fazbot
We recently got a 2016 Transit Connect XLT 2.4L and are planning on towing a light pop-up camper trailer with it. Has anyone on here had experience installing a brake controller? The install is a bit fussy but it would be much easier if there were a factory wiring harness we could hook into with an adapter. I've searched the web and popular sites like etrailer, and have not found any information on using a factory wiring harness adapter to simplify the install. We had a ford dealer install the factory tow hitch and wiring kit which gets us the flat 4-pin connection (lights only, no brakes). Our trailer will be a round-plug 7 pin and we want to add a brake controller for safer handling.
mrtn
Weird. Do you have a 13-pin plug option? My factory installed towbar is equipped with that one. Might be an EU thing, of course. Edited September 2, 2016 by mrtn
Prairie Pyro
If you can find the brake switch on the brake pedal your half way to getting a controller installed. That is the wire(hot when brake depressed) you need to tap to signal the controller. I would give Curt or Hopkins a call for your needs. I have installed many controllers. The best so far IMO is the Hopkins Insight. Good luck and safe camping
G B L
I found the 13 pin module in the wiring diagram, not sure that is available here. mrtn How may wires or contacts does your trailer connector have? Here trailers are not required to have brakes until the weight is 3000 lbs. Ford rates the TC to tow 2000 lbs. Here is a link to a brake controller install video on a 2013 ford Escape. The layout of the Escape is very close to the TC. it should help https://www.etrailer.com/tv-install-tekonsha-prodigy-p3-brake-controller Edited September 3, 2016 by G B L
