Upgrade Brakes for Towing?

Recommended Posts

Hi -

2012 Transit Connect Passenger, Florida USA.  I’m fabricating a tear drop trailer for camping. Should I upgrade from the OEM pads and rotors to performance brakes, like PowerStop or similar?

Just confirm your existing pads, rotors, shoes and drums are in good shape. Replace the worn parts as needed. "Upgraded" rotors won't work any better. The only way to get more braking power is with larger rotors and upgraded calipers like you would see on high performance vehicles (Focus brakes vs Focus RS for example). The only real change you can expect is by changing the brake pad material, but for 99% of users even that makes no real performance difference. Harder metallic pads will last longer but they shorten the lifetime of the rotor.

Drive with the trailer for a season and you will see if any changes are warranted.
