Johnyguy
The gas tank can hold 16.5 gallon of gas but when I down to 4 miles to empty according to the computer and I am filling up With gas I only able to put in 14.25 gallon it happened to me two times , I know the manual mentions that there is a reverse in the tank so you can't fill up the entire amount but I was done to 4 miles to empty by than is should have used up the reserve. Anyone has any thoughts on this ? Thanks
103west43rd
Hello Johnyguy. Here is how it works in the first generation Transit Connects in the US, it may also apply to your second generation......The distance to empty is calculated on the average miles per gallon the vehicle computer has calculated since it was last reset (more on that later). So, if the average miles per gallon as calculated by the Transit Connect computer is 26 and the average on the last tankfull was 28 there is more full left in the tank than the distance to empty would lead you to believe. Now for the "reset" issue. There is no way that I know of, or has been posted, on how to reset the miles per gallon average, except, as I found out, if you disconnect the battery. Unless anyone knows how to reset the miles per gallon average on the first generation Transit Connect after each fuel fillup, the average shown is from brand new! I am very interested on how the miles per gallon average is reset on the second generation Transit Connect if anyone knows how.

I am very interested on how the miles per gallon average is reset on the second generation Transit Connect if anyone knows how.Hi thanks for the post ,I don't have a trip computer when I can see MPG in my van all I got it miles to empty so when I'm done to 4 miles to empty according to the computer and go to the gas station to fill up ,all I can put in the van is 14.25 gallon of fuel if im understanding correctly what you suggesting is and I came to this conclusion as well is there is more fuel had to be left in the tank since it can hold 16.5 gallon, so the trip computer is giving me a wrong number ,I need to test this and carry a gallon of fuel with me and see what happens if I keep driving after the computer showes empty ""0 miles left to empty ". And see how many more miles I can drive it should have there 40 miles left to drive at least. This is the only way to find out , regarding the reset button if I press that that's only resets the trip computer, not the miles to empty. Eazy
I've also noticed mine seems to run a little on the low end, but I don't usually push it past 1/4 tank. The most I've ever put in at a fill up is 11 gallons. A lot of cars use a rather inaccurate way of figuring out how much fuel is in the tank or what the fuel economy is. It's mostly just a ball floating in the tank and the average position of the ball is how it decides where the fuel level is. Depending on where this is in the tank and how it was calibrated, you can varying levels of precision. My other car (Nissan Altima) shows full until it's about 1/4 empty. From there it burns through the last 3/4 of gas super quick (comparatively). I think the Transit may just go in the opposite direction. A little too conservative at the top end just to keep you from running out (and potentially using your roadside assistance.)

103west43rd
Hello mustang. I should have been more specific on my question on how the average miles per gallon is reset on the second generation Transit Connects. My question is, does pushing the "OK" button reset the average miles per gallon data in the powertrain control module, not just the display. This is in reference to forum member Johnyguy and his miles to empty issue. If pressing the "OK" button just resets the display, then the miles to empty will always calculate based on the average miles per gallon held in the powertrain control module. Here is the test, fill up the tank. Start the van. Do not move away from the pump. Press the "OK" button to reset. Now display miles to empty. Since you have not moved, your average miles per gallon is zero and your miles to empty should also be zero since it there is no miles per gallon average to calculate the miles to empty. If there is a figure in the miles to empty display, then the "OK" button reset does not reset the calculation in the powertrain control module. Eazy
Thanks how miles can you get on a full tank in your case? I think I'm getting around 300. I'll look at my spreadsheet and get back to you. Edited October 14, 2014 by Eazy
Eazy
So far, I've averaged 281 miles between 11.186 gallon fill ups. I'm averaging an overall 25.08 miles per gallon.

Eazy
Thanks!!Is that mostly city or mixed? About 2/3 city, 1/3 highway. I have a short commute between home, work, and school everyday. On the weekends I have to do a short highway trip to pick up my daughter.

omniphil
2014 Titanium, 3940lbs. Managed over 30mpg on the last tank and still had 120+ miles left on the tank according to the computer. windguy
your fuel economy is decent, but what's even more impressive is your low cost for gas, now sub $3/g. Wow! you sure do drive a lot of miles. do you have somewhere to go or do you really like just driving around in your new van?

Wow! you sure do drive a lot of miles. do you have somewhere to go or do you really like just driving around in your new van? Normal gas prices have been around $3.15 in my area but I found one station at $2.98, i'll be going there more I put 2000 miles on in 2 weeks and 1000 of that was me driving around everywhere trying to get the break-in over with before vacation, the second half of that was a trip to Canada. Normally I do about 20,000 a year. Work is over an hour away and I love using regular gas again in something that gets decent gas mileage now! Now I need to get the rear area setup like a camper van, that's the main reason I bought this vehicle.
windguy
@Omniphil - gas is heavily taxed in CA. I think regular is around $3.54 for premium brands. Consider yourself lucky in that regard yes - it's nice to have a vehicle that takes regular gas. that's a nice bonus having a TC. driving 20,000 in a year is a lot. glad you're in a fun vehicle now to pass the time. please share your plans for fixing up the back perhaps in another thread. Johnyguy
@Johnyguy You might find this video interesting regarding "Distance to empty" http://support.ford.com/vehicle-features/distance-to-empty Cheers! Thanks for the info however that stil don't really explain why can't I put close to 16.5 gallon of fuel to my tank when my trip computer showes 4miles to empty its been happened the last two times when I was filling up and I allowed two clicks from the pump to be sure I'm all the way full one time little fuel came out because I try to go for the third click ,I'm going to get a small fuel container and drive over the 0 to empty and see what's happens ,I should be able to drive other 40 miles if I have at least 2 more gallon fuel in the tank because those two occasions I was only able to put 14.25 gallon fuel so there should be 2 more gallon left.
