Starting issue T230LX

Hi All, hopefully someone might be able to help

I have a 2005 T230LX with a 1.8 TDCI engine. Drove home yesterday and all was well, van pulled and was good at speed. However after the van cooled it would not start, and I thought it was because I ran it low on fuel - so topped it up via jerry can and the van still wouldn't start.

Did a bit of research on the net and pulled off a blue plug on the back of what I think is the pump, and hey presto van started, very lumpy and some blue smoke - put plug back on and ran it around the block as and all was well.

However after cooling off again van is hard to start again, in fact from cold wont start - pull of blue plug and it starts

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance, and to warn you I am a novice but don't mind getting my hands dirty :)

My 2011 transit connect will not start after sitting. It cranks but no start. This is sporadic. Most times is ok. When it has happened in the past I can jump start it, despite a new battery so pretty sure the issue is not the battery. Last time, it did not respond to the jump. I am a complete novice but any info I can pass on to the mechanic would be useful. I have had 3 different shops look and it starts fine. I’ve spent a bundle at the mercy or lack of from the mechanics. Please advise. Trudy
