TikTokToddy
Hi, new here, I have serious problems with what appears to be a seized gearbox after a clutch replacement job. Can someone direct me to a resource or help me identify exactly what might be going on? Thank you. Craig T.
Fifty150
Who replaced the clutch?
TikTokToddy
Its a long story that i'd rather not go down. But to try cut it short - At first the problem seemed minor so I asked a mobile mechanic to have a look. It progressed into a full clutch job that he insisted he could still do, but the plot thickened later and he scarpered leaving me with my van in bits all over the lawn. It was difficult to find someone to help me out of the pickle but someone did manage to finish the job and put it all back together for a price. It worked for about 1 day then serious problems showed up culminating in seized gearbox? An old friend of mine is coming to see me tomorrow to investigate further but I think the inevitable scrap man will triumph which is a shame as the engine starts fine and its had new sills etc... G B L
If I had to guess I would look at the clutch as that was just replaced. The first place I look at is the last thing that was touched, in this case the Clutch.
Fifty150
It sounds like you are the victim of people who don't know what they are doing. Find someone who actually knows what they are doing. . Then install a new clutch and gearbox.
lowspeedpursuit
I'm skeptical of the "seized" manual trans conceptually, and would also get the clutch sorted and go from there. I feel like realistically, your options are to pay up for a proper shop or dive in and learn how to do it yourself. Need some jackstands and a good socket set, and it might take you the weekend, but it's doable. Not sure what year you have, but the MTX-75 doesn't even look that heavy (120lbs?). When you say "seized", what are we actually talking? Stuck in gear, won't shift? Will it shift out if you rock the van? What happens if you try bleeding the clutch? Are you somewhere you can safely test whether the van jumps forward if you crank it? You shouldn't be on the verge of scrapping a running vehicle without actually being sure you've blown the trans, which is really hard to do in one day with an iffy clutch. And even then, it's repairable with replacement parts.
