Hello everyone,

I am excited to read up on everyone's ideas and designs! I haven't even driven my new Transit yet but I pick it up on Monday.

I purchased this vehicle for family trips and the ability to haul small items. It was either this or a small pickup truck and the projected gas mileage won. Thank you much... Regards, Steve

Hi Steve! I just returned form a 1000 mile trip in my TransConn part of which was through the mountains. I really enjoy the large windshield while in such scenic areas. I averaged 31 MPG, by the way. Admittedly, I was driving conservatively.

Hey Willie,

What mountain range did you travel? I cant wait to take a trip in it. My kids are 13 and 15 and they are not fans yet. I am planning on putting a great flip down screen with possible upgraded audio system in this puppy. They will come around.... Great gas mileage, I would say you are beating the system. Little do people know that there is an art to driving conservatively.

Steve, it was the Appalachians of West Virginia. Not terribly high when compared to the Rockies, but still very scenic. Probably the Alps by Fort Wayne standards! Ha!

My gas mileage is interesting. In the winter, the best I can do is 28 mpg, but in the Summer I can get 31 or rarely even a little better on a long trip. I put the difference down to the different seasonal formulations of gasoline available here, but that is only a guess.

As I said, I do drive pretty conservatively, averaging probably 60-65 MPH. Climbing grades, I let the speed drop to forty or so, watching the tach and keeping the revs under 3000. Any faster and my gas consumption really climbs. I guess not everyone wants to drive that way, but I am in no huge hurry generally. If someone wants to pass, I try to give them every opportunity to do so, and fine by me.

There's a limit to mpg when pushing a brick through air. I have a diesel model and in summer I get 40 mpg around town and 33 mpg on highway, it's just aerodynamics.

Correct. The faster you try to push it, the greater the drag factor becomes in fuel consumption.

It is very hard to maintain a nice even acceleration from a dead stop or even anticipating a stop. Everyone tries to beat each other off the start. No wonder people are complaining so much about fuel costs. It is too bad that they don't realize they are doing it to themselves.
