Regarding FORD Safety Recall 18S20 – Shift Cable Bushing Replacement affecting 2013-2014 Ford Escape, & 2013-2016 Ford Fusion, this failure mode also appears on certain models of the Ford Transit Connect. In my case, I have a 2015 XLT that experienced this failure. The original factory-original bushing is white. The replacement bushing outlined in the recall below is orange. This is a standard Ford part used on "small" chassis Ford vehicles and is common amongst vehicles using this type of transmission shift linkage. The Ford part number for the REPLACEMENT bushing is: DG9Z-7K340-A and can be found at most ANY ford dealership. I paid $5.10USD for it, and ended-up buying two just to have the 2nd one around in case this is actually a recurring problem (or in case I dropped the first one down in the engine bay accidentally during installation!). BACKGROUND: Please note that when I searched for a recall SPECIFICALLY covering this particular failure mode on the Ford Transit Connect I could not find any references to one anywhere. However, a very smart parts guy at my local Ford dealership in Lake Orion, Michigan knew of the problem on the Focus and Escape and had a small box right on his counter full of these replacement bushings. This told me that it's a failure common problem (despite not being specifically referenced to the Transit connect). I suspect that the original plastic bushing was molded from a material not capable of withstanding the constant pressures of the daily shifting cycle. As such, it would seem that if Ford went to all the trouble if initiating a recall action on a number of vehicles with this problem, they wouldn't simply have released the exact same "replacement" bushing, but would have molded it from a more durable material in order to prevent a recurrence. This has been my experience with OEM safety recalls as an auto industry engineer since the OEM is legally responsible for demonstrating to NHTSA that their planned repair solution resolves the safety concern prior to deploying that solution into the field. As such, it is unlikely that NHTSA would have approved an OEM-proposed solution that utilized a bushing the same as the one that originally failed from the factory (common sense?). Incidentally, when replacement parts are produced in a different color, that is usually an indication that they are a different material so that technicians don't erroneously install the wrong replacement part when effecting the repair. Visual cues are important in repair circumstances and used broadly in the auto industry so that quick visual reference can be made when assessing the completion of a safety repair. Here is a link to some of the detail of the recall. REPLACEMENT/INSTALLATION: I knew as soon as I saw the replacement bushing that it was an exact replacement, and as you can see from the photos below it is. To complete the repair, I first snapped the replacement bushing onto the transmission shift lever, then pressed the shift cable onto it. As luck would have it, that was the opposite of the replacement instructions I later found online for the Focus and Escape. regardless, it snapped right in and securely retained the shift cable once installed. The repair took me about 5 minutes and was a bit of a tight squeeze when attempting to get my hands past other 'obstacles' in that area of the engine bay. it was a little challenging holding onto and orienting the replacement bushing when attempting to push my hands past the intake snorkel and fuse box! But, again, it only took 5 minutes total to complete the repair. I hope you find this information helpful. Ken Here are a few photos of the actual linkage and bushing:

Vehicles Affected: Nearly 370 model-year 2014 Ford Transit Connect vans manufactured between March 1, 2014, and May 15, 2014 The Problem: The affected vehicles may have a brake reservoir cap that does not have the required text advising owners which brake fluid the vehicle uses. This could result in someone adding the wrong brake fluid, causing damage to the brake system seals and, in turn, brake fluid leaks; this could lengthen stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash. The Fix: Ford notified owners on July 14, and dealers will replace the brake reservoir cap with the correct one for free. What Owners Should Do: Owners can call Ford at 800-392-3673, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov for more info. Hi there! Recently, my car had transmission failure. It has less than 60000 but over the 5 year guarantee period by a month. My car was fixed by a 3rd party. I found out that Ford had issued earlier a technical service bulletin acknowledging that the 2010-2013 transit connect may exhibit an upshift flare or lack of 3rd and or 4th gear along with burnt automatic transmission fluid. They have a direct clutch repair kit available to address these concerns. I feel that Ford should have informed me of this issue so I can have it fix before my guarantee was over. Also, the NTSA has recalled several 2013 models with the same transmission failure issue. Unfortunately, Transit Connect is not among them. Has anybody in this forum had the same problem with the transmission?

I was just told by a dealer that I couldn't test drive a Transit Connect due to an active recall, they didn't give me any info about the problem, anyone hear of this active recall

Hi, just took my 2016 SWB Wagon to the dealership on 2/6/17 to have this recall work done, and the rear sliding doors now require excessive force to open them from the outside. This is the recall for the faulty pawl spring tab on the rear sliding door's latches. The recall number is 16S30 "SIDE DOOR LATCH REPLACEMENT". I would estimate it takes at least 4 times the strength to pull the outside door handle than it previously took. My pre-teen daughters now cannot open the doors. Has anyone else had this recall work done yet? I'm wondering if this is an issue with Ford's repair parts, or if my dealership has screwed up. Thanks for the feedback!

Mar 29, 2017 | DEARBORN, Mich. Ford Issues Three Safety Recalls and One Safety Compliance Recall in North America DEARBORN, Mich., March 29, 2017 – Ford Motor Company is issuing three safety recalls and one safety compliance recall in North America. Details are as follows: Ford issues safety recall for certain 2013-15 Ford Escape, Ford Fiesta ST, Ford Fusion and Ford Transit Connect 1.6-liter GTDI vehicles for under-hood fire risk Ford is issuing a safety recall in North America for approximately 230,000 2014 Ford Escape, 2014-15 Ford Fiesta ST, 2013-14 Ford Fusion and 2013-15 Ford Transit Connect vehicles equipped with 1.6-liter GTDI engines. Ford’s investigation of these vehicles has identified a risk of under-hood fires. In the affected vehicles, a lack of coolant circulation could cause an engine to overheat, resulting in a crack in the cylinder head. A cracked cylinder head can result in a pressurized oil leak. Oil that comes into contact with a hot engine surface increases the risk of a fire in the engine compartment. Ford is aware of 29 reports of fire associated with this issue in the United States and Canada. No injuries have been reported. Affected vehicles equipped with 1.6-liter GTDI engines include: 2014 Escape – Louisville Assembly Plant, Feb. 12, 2013 to Sept. 2, 2014 2014-15 Fiesta ST – Cuautitlan Assembly Plant, Jan. 22, 2013 to May 27, 2014 2013-14 Fusion – Hermosillo Assembly Plant, Feb. 15, 2012 to June 6, 2014 2013-15 Transit Connect – Valencia Assembly Plant, June 13, 2013 to Dec. 14, 2014 There are approximately 230,756 vehicles equipped with 1.6-liter GTDI engines located in North America, including 208,584 in the United States and federalized territories, 21,854 in Canada and 318 in Mexico. The Ford reference number for this recall is 17S09. Ford will mail customers instructions from the owner’s manual on how to check and refill coolant. Customers can continue to drive their vehicles, but should see their dealer if their vehicle exhibits a coolant leak, overheating or frequently needs coolant added. When service kits are available, dealers will install a coolant level sensor with supporting hardware and software at no charge to the customer.

Ford will replace the brake hydraulic control unit on 600 2016 Transit Connect vans. The affected vehicles, all built at the Blue Oval's Valencia, Spain, factory between February 22 and April 9, 2016, could suddenly lose pump performance from the brake hydraulic control unit. With a loss of pump performance, drivers would be without just about every electronic nanny – "electronic stability control and related systems including roll stability control, anti-lock braking system, emergency brake assist, curve control, trailer sway control, traction control and hill start assist performance" could all fail without warning, Ford says. The company hasn't received any reports of deaths or injuries relating to the recalls. Ford will notify owners of the affected vehicles and ask them to report to their local dealer for free repairs.

As per Automotive News this morning........Another recall relates to a potential for fuel-pump seizures on 50,157 cars: the 2014 Focus, Edge, Escape and Transit Connect and the 2014-15 Fiesta. An issue with the nickel plating on the fuel pump could prevent the vehicles from starting or make them stall while driving, Ford said. The company said it knows of one accident that may be related, but no injuries. As per Autoblog........Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 50,000 2014 Ford Focus, Edge, Escape and Transit Connect vehicles and 2014-15 Ford Fiesta vehicles in North America (actual 50,157) for an issue with the nickel plating on the fuel pump, which may cause it to seize. If the fuel pump seizes, a vehicle may not start or may stall while driving. An engine stall without warning while driving increases the risk of a crash. Ford is aware of one allegation of an accident that may be related to this condition. Affected vehicles include certain Ford Focus vehicles built October 26, 2013 – May 22, 2014 at Michigan Assembly Plant; certain Ford Edge vehicles built April 30, 2014 to May 21, 2014 at Oakville Assembly Plant; certain Ford Escape vehicles built Feb. 14, 2014 to March 7, 2014 at Louisville Assembly Plant; certain Ford Transit Connect vehicles built Nov. 11, 2013 to Aug. 29, 2014 at Valencia Assembly Plant; and certain Ford Fiesta vehicles built April 10, 2014 to June 17, 2014 at Cuautitlán Assembly Plant. There are 45,505 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories, 4,618 in Canada and 34 in Mexico. Dealers will replace the fuel delivery module at no cost to the customer.

Two recalls affect Ford Transit Connect vehicles. In the first, 25,597 of the 2014 models are being recalled because the fuel and vapor lines may be incorrectly routed, which could cause a fuel leak and lead to a fire. The second one affects 92 of the 2015 models because the bracket that holds the fuel filter to the vehicle frame may become detached over time, resulting in knocking sounds or an engine stall, which could increase the risk of a crash. In the first Transit Connect recall, dealers will inspect the lines and reroute and replace them as needed, Ford said. In the second one, dealers will reinforce the underbody structure if necessary.
