battery light staying on alternator test

hi all, I went to start my connect this morning and the battery light never went off, so I did a little research and I checked the voltage of my battery when the engine was off and it was showing 12volts and with the engine ticking over it was showing 11volts, now I'm lead to belive that this means my alternator is bad but I've been reading about this 3 pin plug wire from the alternator to the battery and was wondering if this could cause this voltage reading and if its worth replacing that before I fork out for the alternator. Its a 58 plate 220 TDCI high roof

Thanks any help is appreciated.
