KevinH
I'm starting my mods (some of the 17 modifications by Don Ridley) now the weather here is warmer and dry... My question relates to preferred colours. I'm ordering some parts shortly and wonder if I should pick a colour like Green/White to identify my after market wiring or bother to replicate OEM colours. I'm using BLK for GRND and obviously RED or BROWN for heavy feeds direct from the Battery Bus Bar. I work as an Electrician but not an Auto Electrician so understand the importance of identifications. Any guidance from you experts would be gratefully received.... Don Ridley
I have not seen any documentation on wire color standards for automotive wiring. Ford seems to have some standard colors but these may change with product line.Note that automotive wire ampacity does not follow NEC (NEC ampacity limts are overrated for safety). I bought 5 or 6 rolls of 14 and 18 ga wire. I chose colors that I liked. 14ga is overkill for most applications. 18ga is versatile for all circuits 10amp and lower. KevinH
Thanks for your help Don. I've noted your advice ! Yes I'm aware that the rated current carrying capacity is different for automotive and I'm following the cable manufacturers specs in relation to cable length runs and protective fusing. I intend to post some pics and info on my mods. I have been successful in removing a lot of the interior trim and now know where the trims clips and mounting points are concealed. I have not yet broken a trim clip or damaged any of the plastics so its going well so far.... Cheers ! Don Ridley
lowspeedpursuit
I sometimes replicate factory colors (A/C I added on my truck is purple, for example) but I don't think it's a huge deal. Red is hot, black is ground. I also treat yellow as hot, since it's used for const. +12v in radios and ignition switches. Anything else is just whatever wire I have available in the right size. I always seem to have a lot of green laying around. I want to note, I don't love brown for hot. Brown is ground for German manufacturers, so if you ever work on a VW or something, it's easy to get turned around.
