KevinH
I'm adding LED map reading type lights in the overhead console. I understand a driver or current limiting resistor is required to prevent burn-out and current run-away with LED lamps. Anyone done this or has knowledge of a driver ? Don Ridley
You do not need any additional components to install LED lights designed to operate as stand alone devices. Any 12v automotive LED light works without modification. If you purchase single LEDs from an electronics supplier, you need to add circuitry. KevinH
Thanks for your prompt reply. These are stand-alone LED spots from -> https://www.bltdirect.com/all-led-16mm-dia-1-watt-ip44-led-marker-light-warm-white-white-finish?adcid=pla&_intent=LOW&gclid=Cj0KCQjwr82iBhCuARIsAO0EAZyzuR5_hLfjkjHDrQe7yoDCbod84vTOPo7PLOLx8FyRfDvZ_L49c88aAl2bEALw_wcB They are designed to be operated from a driver although they are 12volt. I do have a 12volt constant current driver which operates from a 12v DC source but RS Components have discontinued the product. So I'm now wondering if I need one at all? My fear is if I connect direct to the 12 volt circuitry within the vehicle it'll just burn-out in short order?
Don Ridley
I don't know the circuitry in the LED assembly or the details of their AC voltage/ LED driver. But they are likely just using a switching-type transformer. The vehicle 12vdc is better than the transformer output.****EDIT: these LEDs may not work.****. Buy one and test it or find LEDs made for generic 12vdc sources. These are easy to install, are bright and don't need any special power supply. Edited May 4, 2023 by Don Ridley Changed opinion on LEDs
KevinH
Thanks Don ! Yes I think I will go for this option to avoid possible future issues....
ThatsMyDawg
I am not sure what year you have, etc. but you do not need anything special for swapping maps lights. I have changed every interior light to LED. Zero issues and is now super UFO bright just like I like them. 11TCXLT
