2019 TC 2.0 stutters at constant RPM

My 2019 TC 2.0 stutters at constant RPM. Hard acceleration it’s fine until you let off gas, then stutter/sputter starts again. Say, at 5,500 RPMs on up it clears up. Starts up fine, no codes, no engine light. Changed plugs, no difference (78k miles) checked coil packs. Took to a shop, they had it for a day and verified what I just typed. They wanted more time, I needed it back. They were thinking of swapping injectors. I can throw money at it, I don’t want to, and I don’t want to pay a shop to do just that. Any ideas? Find a different shop perhaps.

I should also add that this has been a very reliable vehicle, and very well maintained. I forgot to mention, I’ve driven it to Saskatchewan Canada several times in the last year and a half. So it’s seen temperatures from -56 to 120 degrees F. Would that cause problems like condensation? But that should have cleared up after running the tank down to empty a few times I’d think. I have been running Lucas gas treatment through it since the problem started too. Surprisingly it had no problem starting in -25.

You need a scan tool with live data and a test ride.

Thanks GBL, I would think the shops I’ve taken it to would have the scan tool. I’ve taken it to two shops now, and just dropped it off for the second time at the second shop. I can’t say I have any faith whatsoever in them now, when I picked it up last Friday, they were thinking EGR valve. I thought about that over the weekend, and, I don’t think my van has one single symptom of a bad EGR valve. When I dropped it off today, I questioned the guy behind the counter (not the guy who worked on it) why they thought it was the EGR valve, he said the testing done show it to be that, or the transmission. Transmission? An engine that sputters as you’re driving along is a transmission??? I know the TC has had tranny problems from the beginning, from what I’d heard, they were using a Ford Taurus unit back in 2010. Mine has the 8spd, but that’s irrelevant imo. How can they think it’s a transmission problem?

I’ve had similar with my 2020 2.0l. All started after a real heavy rainy day, I didn’t drive it in any rain that day but prior was completely fine for the 50 miles I drove. I started it up & took off & was very erratic, rpm’s all over the place, falling on its face, starving for fuel it seemed. Turned around back home, after a bit CEL came on..next day code read for cylinder misfire & cyl 1 coil….ordered coil & plugs, it helped but still had a slight shudder in rpm’s. Was able to drive to my local dealer & they have been guessing since with ford..no codes to show, thought it was egr, replaced that-no difference. Tech is thinking maybe oxygen sensor…waiting to hear back from ford & their next plan of attack.  It’s smooth until you apply brakes & it gets kinda jerky underneath ya & just at idle probably jumps a few hundred rpm up & down. Only 42k & I bought it with 22k. No issues until this & it’s quite frustrating. I left the diesel world to have more piece of mind…

Cool. A good scan tool will allow a test of the EGR valve operation and help to solidify the diagnosis. A good scan tool will do a power balance test and that will show if the engine is in good running condition.

If you pinch the hose to the booster does it smooth  out?  If so the booster could be leaking .
