  1. Yeah, I've been looking nationwide. Looks like I would have to take a trip to buy the van because out here (Northern CA) the TC's are about $2-3K more expensive for the exact same specs (and finding one with glass all around is pretty hard). I'm planning on converting it to a mini-camper (I've been designing it on and off in sketchup and in my head for the past three years so it is a long time coming! ). I've scoured the internet for ideas (furgovw.org is a great resource) and I have a long-term plan worked out. I just need to be able to justify the cost and the inconvenience of having a second vehicle in an urban environment where it needs to be moved every 72 hours. I used to own a Westfalia and really miss it, though I would not miss the unreliability. I am interested in the first gen TC's because a) cost and b) they offer about 10" more headroom which really counts for a lot when using it as a temporary home. The hardest part is going to be able to buy it remotely. I am too nervous to buy one that I haven't seen in person, and the thought of flying 6 hours to look at a car that may have disappeared before I get there, OR is not what was advertised is somewhat unappealing. Still, it may be what I have to do. I've been mostly looking in towns that I have friends or family in. That way maybe they can take a look at the thing on my behalf. Thanks for the heads up on the different models. I will make my searches a lot easier. If I decide to buy (I am also considering a month-long trip to Germany as an alternative) I will be pulling the trigger in about a month.
  2. Thanks for the quick reply. I'll check out the link you sent. I really like the factory look, but it seems like it would be prudent for me to include ones without the extra windows and consider installing the aftermarket ones myself.
  3. Hi there, Sorry to revive such an old thread, but do you know if the rear panels (the ones on the side, behind the sliding doors) on the 2010-2013 models are also removable in a similar way (so that I can install factory glass panels)? I am really interested in buying a TC but I am finding it difficult to find ones that have glass all around (something I really really want).
  4. Sorry to ask stupid questions... but I'm looking to get a TC (2010-2013 model) and I really want the full windows all around. Those are fairly hard to find. Are you saying you were able to take a cargo van and (re) convert it back to the windowed version? From what I gather, they all started life as a fully windowed van and then had the windows removed and metal panels glued (or somehow affixed) in place. If you were able to convert it back that would be awesome news. Any chance you could give a brief description of what was involved (as far as you know)? I don't need a play by play, just a rough idea of what was involved (cutting, painting, welding, gluing, etc.) Thanks so much. Edit: Just noticed that you have a 2015. I'm still interested in hearing about your process though. Thanks.
  5. Cool info, thanks. I am looking into buying myself a TC and making it into a mini RV. I like the size (I live in a city, so parking and maneuverability are key) and I like the fact that it can become my daily driver as well (It will eventually replace my other car and become my primary vehicle). Once question I have is about load weights on the roof. I want to get a roof top tent (something like: http://www.cascadiatents.com/index.php?m=94&s=594&c=&id=118). The document from ford lists a maximum weight of about 220 pounds on the roof. That is hardly enough to cover the weight of the tent plus one person. I have also heard that there is a difference between a dynamic load vs. a static load and that the numbers that automakers quote for their roof racks is dynamic load (and that static loads can be much higher). Can anyone confirm (or crush my hopes ) that the roof could support more than 220 pounds of static load (i.e. two people plus the weight of the pop up tent)? Thanks! P.S. This is kind of what I am planning on doing to the inside: http://www.tinyhousetalk.com/kangoo-tiny-camper-slash-motorhome/
  6. Hi, I don't own a transit connect, but I have been considering getting one to convert to a camper (ala a mini westfalia). Before I commit to buying (and I really don't have the cash to do that anytime too soon anyway) I would like to see about renting one now and again so that I could build out and test-install a westy style interior. I have been unable to find any place that rents them though. Does anyone know which companies rent them in the U.S. (I live in the San Francisco bay area). Thanks!
