I have a 2014 TC XLT without Sync. It has this insert in the center of the overhead bin with a couple of small, round grates on the outside. Does this do anything? If not, can it be replaced with something useful?

I just put an iOttie Easy One Touch 3 (http://www.iottie.com/Product/Detail/2118/iOttie-Easy-One-Touch-3-Car-_-Desk-Mount-Holder) in my 2014 TC and it works really well. It has an extendable arm which allows mounting to the dash while keeping the phone within easy reach.
