Engine and transmission options

As this is the first year of this van at all in the US, I'm probably getting too far ahead of things, but... The Transit Connect is very appealing to my husband and I, as we have been considering replacing our aged station wagon with a vehicle that can haul enough for our leisure activities - dirtbikes, track bikes, SCUBA, bicycles - while still being practical for daily use (we have a full-sized van for that right now, but try to use it very little, as it sucks gas and is a pain to park). I had been considering an Element, but I think the TC could potentially be a better option.

However, the 1.8L diesel with the 5-speed would be more appealing than the auto. Is there any thought that Ford might bring this flavor over?

I have followed this introduction for the last 3 years and finally have mine. I also would have liked the diesel but couldn't wait any longer. There has consistently been a demand on all the TC article comment sections for the diesel and just as adamant a response by Ford that we will only see the gas engine. At one point the whole TC project was looking in doubt, but it is here and selling well so I guess if Ford can put together an engine like the VW products it may happen. I suspect that with enough of us constantly demanding better milage they may give in??

The milage is not as good as the Euro-diesel TC's but it is miles better than my old Aerostar AWD. I just did a trip from Vancouver to Whistler (250 km round trip) and some local city driving as well totalling 480 km on about 45 litres of fuel. The truck was not empty and I wasn't easy on speed (1:40 hours to Whistler).

I read an article that said Ford conducted a survey which showed virtually no interest in a diesel option for the North American Transit Connect. Maybe that's the opinion of fleet owners who can write off their fuel costs or something, who knows. Fair enough, I suppose. After all, the Transit Connect is offered as a commercial vehicle and not a daily driver.

The only solid argument I've read is one that pointed out that Ford would have to invest heavily in training for its technicians to support in-service diesels, whereas every Ford tech already knows the good old 2.0 Duratec.

I'd still like to get in touch with Ford to offer my thoughts. I tried to find a Ford Canada representative at the Toronto Autoshow recently, but I couldn't find any. It was getting close to closing time and I guess they had all taken off already.
