My previous experience with plastic centering rings is that they are fine until you get them hot-enough melt. Even then, they get tossed and you rely on the taper in the lugnuts to center the wheel. (I've only ever seen them get that hot running multiple really hard laps at a race track.)
I went back and forth on going to the 225/50's as well. I was concerned about rubbing the front inner fender at full lock, but it really does look like there's room. I plan to try them when the current tires are done. I look forward to not only the increase contact patch, but also the 1% change in final drive ratio. Seems like lower gearing could make the van even more fun :-)
