Hi boys & girls im new here so be gentle

I was out doing some quotes for work and was driving down the slip rd onto the motorway and i lost power & the engine management light came on I pulled over onto the hard shoulder switched off then restarted all ok so i set off again a mile or so later the same thing happens but when i restart the engine management light stays on & only drives in limp mode....Ive spoken to a friend who has said that same thing happened to his VW he left it over night & the next morning it was like nothing had happened and had no more problems with it ....I know i would be expecting a bit much for mine to be as simple as that but without a diagnostic computer anyone point me in the right direction....If for instance it was the EGR valve would a simple clean sort it out
