Ford Transit Connect Battery Spacer

I've seen it mentioned in other threads before, but just thought I would upload a picture of the battery spacer in my Gen 2 Transit Connect, for those looking to use a battery that will not fit without it removed. Hopefully this helps others more quickly find info on this via search engines. I recently replaced my stock battery with this AGM battery from Rock Auto.

If you upgrade from an FLA battery to an AGM it is a good idea to configure the ECU (BCM module in the TC) for the new battery type. The two battery types have slightly different charging requirements and I think Ford programmed different schemes for each type. Will the AGM work without this change? Yes. But the lifetime make be compromised and that would be a waste for such an expensive battery.

Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't seen this mentioned in other threads discussing replacing the stock battery with an AGM. Is this something the end-user can do on their own?

So you have to remove the spacer to make your new battery fit?

Actually, I didn't bother trying! I had read a handful of other threads dealing with aftermarket battery replacements and it was suggested to remove the spacer, lest the new battery shouldn't fit.

You can reset the BMS with a good scan tool. I use the Forscan app with a good elml327 adapter for the OBII port. If you have the 2.5l engine, you don't have BMS.

If you are computer savvy, use Forscan on a PC to change the battery type. But I admit I can't be sure it makes much of a difference.

Thanks, I thought I'd read somewhere that the 2.5L engine doesn't have BMS. That is the case for me.

Reset of the battery monitoring system is an option on Forscan.  I have the 2.5L engine, and there's no BMS.  I don't see one.  There's nothing hooked up to the battery.

When I try to read the battery's state of charge, nothing comes up on the gauge.  Nonetheless, I followed through on FORScan and rest the battery monitoring system, which does not exist.  I don't think that it did anything.

I don't think you have a battery current sensor unless you have BMS.

I don't have a battery current sensor.  It's just odd that with FORScan, I can reset the BMS which does not exist.

Forscan is not sophisticated enough (and probably not even Ford IDS) to determine what hardware is installed for the various optional features. For example, you can activate cruise control in Forscan without having the correct steering wheel. This has caused some problems for users who inquisitively change Forscan settings to see what will happen. But apparently you are safe to reset BMS without the additional hardware.

With FORScan, when you search for battery, dozens of options appear.

Apparently, FORScan sees it as an option in the various computer modules.  But it does not mean that my van actually has any of those options.
