    Is this thread in the right place? Some comments seem out of place as well. I was just asking if there's anyone maintaining this forum as it looks jumbled up and out of place. For instance, one spot is open to forum support and several new members posted topic in this forum based on issue with their vehicles. So those topics are in the wrong place. I merely asked if you or whomever owners or maintains the site would allow me to mod so I can clean this up for them, I have time and will gladly do so.

    Eagerly waiting your reply and no I'm not a robot but I played one on tv ...

    Just out of curiousity, anybody ever cut those welds and lift the panel to peek inside? I've found any boxed in area like that is a magnet for rust and rot. Also, seems to me, if it doesn't provide any structural strength, be a great place to store tools or whatever (gun locker maybe?) if you add some clips or hinges to make it removable.

    Same as the gen one's then. No need to cut the front support as I don't need the extra headroom over the front seats, and it makes a nice reinforcement for a cargo area between the original roof and topper for light duty storage like blankets and such.

    Mine need a 5x8 foot hole if I remember right ...  ;-}

    ... and ya ... that is a MaxxAir fan, and measures 14x14. One word of caution - put the remote in a safe place as the built in control panel sucks ... not a bad idea to add the batteries for that to your annual list of things to do.

    PS - if the type two's are anything like my 2011, there's only one support rib between the front and rear doors. You can see where mine was cut out for the pop top.

    ** Not seeing anything for the older TCs at the links provided.

    I had the roof bumped up on a 2011 with good results.The new top adds about a foot, and height was around 54" without.

    Few other mods so far on what's still a work in progress.  I was gonna get fancy with steps and such (notice the step bumper on the rear doors, but decided to go with a portable for the side door. Not much weight, 350 pound capacity, sturdy with no wobble, and just pick it up and toss it inside when not in use.

    The two stepper is perfect for splitting the height up to the cargo floor. I'll be adding a couple grips once I get the "kitchen" and storage unit installed.

    Six foot tall, so I still have to hunch over a bit, but I can actually walk into the thing now.  Mine came with a two piece cargo wall, so I just removed the section behind the drivers seat so I'll be able to fold that forward for a bit more sleeping room. Left the passenger side cargo wall in place as it's handy for the already mounted inverter and such. Total length from the rear doors to the back of the drivers seat set all the way back is around 70 inches. Width is four feet between the wheel wells, and about 57" wall to wall.

    Yes, you DO need to get creative when setting it up, but there's a lot of different options, and lots of ideas from other folk who've converted them over the years. My plan is to just use it for a weekend solo camper, so it should work fine, and I figure it'd be good for a couple if you're extremely friendly.

    sKiZo got a reaction from rpk3mp in What is this object?
    If you can test the rack, do so. Not exactly cheap to buy new - Use it or sell it. There's a few different brands out there, so best bet would be to find a mfg sticker and do some digging for how to wire up the controller if that came with the unit - maybe some little black box you've been scratching your head over? That said, most of the power units are just added on to the basic unit, so the rack should work fine without the controller.

    sKiZo got a reaction from CarrieLeigh in Mercedes Is Bringing a Pop-Up Camper Version of its Metris Van to the U.S.
    Was hoping to find something like that for the TC when I went to "pop" the top, but ended up going with a fixed roof that gives me a dual purpose, weekend camper/wheelchair accessible ride. Even has some decent lines that fit the vehicle. Hard part was getting someone to do the conversion, but no regrets as it's working well for me ... and best of all ... no leaks!

    PS ... the fiberglass roof is from a company called Fiberine in California. This one adds eight inches, but they do make one a full foot. I'm over six foot and have to crouch a bit, but it's still a BIG improvement over the stock height. They also do an optional plywood inner liner that adds a LOT of strength if you plan on adding an AC or solar or whatever.

    And ya, I know I could have gone with a standard raised roof Transit, but really didn't want to end up driving a truck.  ;-}

    sKiZo got a reaction from jrm223 in Adding rear window on 2014 or newer TC?
    Yup, on the screens. I plan to use my TC as a weekend camper and the sliders all around plus a maxxifan up top provide a lot of ventilation. I'll also be adding a heavy curtain or accordian door behind the seats to keep the cab's heat from the rear.

    PS - the sliders here are a pleasant surprise. They were a bit tight at first, but a bit of silicone grease on the tracks took care of that nicely.

    Somebody rang?

    Here's my aftermarket trailer windows mounted up. Universal fit and various sizes to choose from. These were recommended by the shop after seeing the van. Your results may vary - I'm thinking you could go a size bigger on the later series van.

    Nice little sliders complete with screens, and various adapter rings for proper fitment on various thickness door panels. I went with the WD03 and WD04 models. Good fit for the vehicle. Only concern really is getting the "weep holes" set right so any water drains properly.

    PS ... they're certainly smaller than the stock glass, but the visibility is actually quite good. Way better than solid steel anyway. ;-}

    Is that the "four way stretch" carpet? Supposed to do a lot of weird shapes with that if you're careful.

    Plan here is to just do some carpet inserts in the big flat sections and paint the rest. Got a six pack of that new DupliColor lumpy paint that's supposed to give you kind of a naugahyde surface depending on how thick you put it on. You can also peel it off for a few months if you decide you don't like it.

    I went with a strip of butyl rope caulk used for sealing windshields. Stuff is a 1/2" diameter but you can stretch it down to any size you need. Press the window in place, then tighten it as much as possible without distorting the panel. Once it's in, you can just run a dull knife around the edges (plastic is good so you don't damage the paint) and peel off anything that oozed out. A rag damped with mineral spirits does a nice job of cleaning the edges so it looks pretty much factory.

    PS ... I might have mentioned it earlier, but the windows I used were recommended by the seller after an eye's on inspection of my 2011. One advantage to living relatively close to the shop, eh. Be interesting to see their recommendations for the later model TCs ...

    sKiZo got a reaction from jrm223 in 2022 Transit Connect test mule sighting?
    I'd be tempted if they were to raise the roof on a Flex, went with side slider doors,  and got rid of the windows while they're at it ... kind of a retro delivery van look. Was actually looking at those before buying my TC, but couldn't find an aftermarket roof for it. It's a really flat stock roof, and most any universal van top would do the job, but I like how the TC turned out after the conversion, so no regrets.

    Problem there is the bean counters called it a car and killed it with the rest of the "cars" in the Ford lineup. I'm sure they haven't tossed the tooling though ... nudge nudge ...

    Bugs can be right tasty ...

    Here's what the rear windows on my type one look like inside. You can see the only modification (other than cutting the hole) was prying off the vertical panel stiffener from the cargo insert.

    Oh. And easy enough to see - the van is still a work in progress.  Kinda sorta got side tracked - like most stuff lately ...  ;-{

    sKiZo got a reaction from KevinRollin in Vintage Technologies sliding windows
    Moral of that story - go with smaller windows? <G>

    Vintage Technologies is about 100 mile round trip from here, so I stopped by their shop so they could have a peek at what I had to work with, then went with their recommendations.  They also marked the panels to show where to put them for the guy who did the install. Side windows are 21x14 (VT #WD07) ,  and rear doors are 16x14 (VT #WD03).  You also have to match the trim rings to the body - TC used "0" thickness rings designed for thin panels like mine.

    Anyway - I figured most anything would be better than no windows at all, but was pleasantly surprised by how much visibility improved, both side and back, especially after gutting the cargo wall. I've also got a backup camera, but prefer to actually see what's behind me when driving. The smaller rear windows are a good fit for the back doors I think.

    PS - careful with sliders - you'll want to make sure the drain holes are pointing either down or back, or you could get some water inside. Mine are right and tight ...

    No complaints here, which is kind of a bummer as I really like to complain. ;-}

    Brings to mind the question - anyone retrofit a cargo  van with the AC duct work from a passenger type? Doesn't seem like it'd be all that difficult. That said, I'm surprised the stock AC does as well as it does, with the help of a MaxxFan mounted towards the back of the roof.

    My kind of camping, eh. I set up in a "primitive" section and have an inverter for some low watt AC stuff I can run thru an inverter. Van is small enough none of the tent types have ever complained ... at least till I open up my tiny little 4x8 trailer anyway ... it's WAY bigger on the inside! <G>

    PS - lost a leg and couldn't drive the Ranger stick shift anymore, which is why I went with the TC in the first place. I've already go a convertible bed and kitchen set up in the TC (I posted up a pic of that "in progress" earlier in the thread), but have been mulling over converting the back bedroom of the tent trailer into a foyer and attaching the thing to the side door. Stay tuned!

    @Fifty 150 Let's see.  If you are sitting in your vehicle with the air on, the multi-speaker stereo blasting, driving an automatic, on cruise control,with the LCDs playing a movie etc., are you really driving?  Or just another guy taking refuge from the wife.

     Sorry but I am 74 years old and can no longer do tent camping.  What is the more likely scenario is I'm sitting around a campfire in a forested area watching the moon and the stars while enjoying a cold brew after I grilled a great steak over the campfire.  Then when I can't stay awake anymore from all the fresh air, I crawl into my bed and watch the 10 PM news and fall asleep only to be wakened 6 hours later by the chirping birds.  Can anyone else vision that?

    Standard conduit fittings.For wider tarp ,I have 2 pieces of foam pipe insulation with a slit that slide on to the top of the door.

    I'm thinking a couple spring loaded adjustable shower rods to sit between the doors and hook a bungie net to those ... no mods required on the van at all.
