  2. And just in case anyone is interested in what this looks like on a car,......a 52" light bar can fit across the roof of your Transit Connect. It just takes a little creative mounting, and some fabricated brackets.
  3. williarty, don't mind the kindergarten drawing.....but the light bar can easily be wired with a 15A fuse, a heavy duty toggle switch, some 16 AWG wire, and grounded back to the battery. But just in case, refer to a wiring chart to be sure that you are using the correct size wire for your wiring run.
  4. williaty, What I did with my pickup truck, because I didn't want to drill into the roof, was attach the light bar to a couple of magnets. That way, I can take it off when I'm done. Since I live in The City, and park on the street, I don't have to worry about someone stealing the light bar off the roof of my truck. The mounting brackets are bolted onto magnets, then sprayed with Plasti-Dip. The wiring is simply soldered onto a 2 pin, waterproof headlight harness/socket/plug. In the case of the light in the photos, I used size H10, because I happen to have had the parts, and because H10 is also the same size as the OEM fog lights on the F-150. On the Transit Connect, my lights are connected by a different type of waterproof connector. You can simply solder your wires and heat shrink them.
  5. The Philips and the Sylvania are the best built, and have the best warranty. They are some of the most expensive. But that does not make them the brightest.   9. Thanks guys - you're all brilliant! Changing the bulb type to a LED for the back-up light seems like a really easy and low cost fix to add more light when backing up. Once again, I was overthinking this and not looking for the obvious. I checked the bulb chart in the manual, shown below, and I'm after a W16W - 16W bulb. Seems like there are lot of options for replacement bulbs, some links below.   10. @boomereps - glad I can help. Even if you don't want to replicate this, at least it gives you a starting point to ponder off of. Yeah, it's very crude. It was a proof of concept. Considering how my first two attempts failed quickly, I really slapped this together just to see if it would work without trying to make it fancy out of the gate. I've made that mistake too many times. I guess I can clean it up a little and replace those shimmed out drywall screws with some bolts/nuts. Because I park on the shoulder of the road, there might just enough camber in the road to make the driver's side door more vulnerable. Perhaps that's your situation in the parking lot that maybe isn't flat. As creatures of habits, we always park in the same parking area when going to stores. Try a different spot next time. Attached is marked up pic with another option shown in red. For me, the height would be a problem. The one reason I like my design is because it doesn't stress the hinges. There's enough give so the doors can flop freely. I guess you can replace the rigid piece of wood with something that telescopes out if storage is an issue. I store mine between sail bags on the hanging rack so it's out of the way. Keep us posted on what you come up with.

  13. I installed the led back-up lights Fifty recommend in one of his posts. They are brighter than the stock bulbs.
  14. Thanks, Windguy. I thought I remembered you doing this but the search wouldn't find it for me. Yup, a little crude looking on the close up But effective. Being able to throw a tarp over that makes for a great standup changing area, too. I had a thought today about using a rubber or plastic trailer wheel chock in the hinge area. It's a pretty big gap, might have to design my own. These would take up less space than a two door spanning bar like you have, unless I could make the bar a folding version. I have more storage concerns because I have the passenger van (or as Ford calls it, the wagon) The driver's side door is the one I have the most problems with.
  15. My Transit Connect is a body wagon. Sometimes a booty wagon. I only move people. Dollar for dollar, it is one of the least expensive vehicles that seats 7. With the folding seats, you can configure and reconfigure any way you want. Mine sees passengers in wheelchairs, and like you will be doing, hauls little ones in car seats. The air conditioning has worked well, even with heat in the 90's. And like every Ford I've ever driven, the heater puts out plenty of heat, even in winter months, great head room and leg room. Very nimble in comparison to F-Series pickups and Econoline Vans of yesteryear. As far as bells and whistles, leather seats, a quiet cabin, smooth ride, high fidelity sound system.......luxury and comfort come in vehicles that cost twice as much. I have a truck for hauling and towing. My Transit Connect has never hauled or towed. But I have not had any issues, with using the van as a passenger vehicle.
  16. I installed amber lights onto those plastic trim panels, on part that faces to the side (not rear facing), and they turn on with my fog lights. In my state, you're allowed to have red or amber side markers. I also installed an LED light on the plastic trim panel of the lift gate, which turns on with my backup camera. You could always install a work ligh on the roof. Or simply upgrade your reverse lights with LED.

  19. Has anyone seen or considered adding some type of exterior lighting to the back of a Gen 2? This wouldn't be a real necessity for me because I don't drive much at night, but recently I was backing down the driveway and had a hard time seeing behind me. The rearview camera optics are probably better than my eyes, but it's still marginal. Probably would be a useful feature to have if you're camping or you're in a remote dark area and need to back up or turn around. It would be cool to have some type of dash or cab mounted switch to toggle the light(s). And then the question of where to mount the lights. Perhaps in that upper dummy panel above the light cluster. Just a rambling thought.

  21. I got four FOB's with the van so I have two FOB's stashed , one inside and one outside, and have not experienced any problems. One advantage of the TC is that you can keep the FOB inside and still lock the doors. Some vehicles don't let you do that to prevent you from locking your FOB inside.
